Had this company as a customer, for prototype work, several of the company's on this list were a customer of mine at one time, sadly, majority have closed up, consolidated, gone, Wisconsin took a huge hit in globalization of manufacturing.
A little trivia here.At one time Briggs and Stratton was the largest supplier of performance engines in the world. Good luck.Have fun.Be safe. Leo
Another was the T&M Marine 2 cycle, a company founded by Termatt & Monahan in Oshkosh. They also later produced a 4 cycle under the Universal name.
this belongs to a friend , he wants to sell it...runs like a champ...110/220 looks heavy duty...I thought it'd make a great coffee table...
You know, being from Detroit, I grew up thinking that all things automotive and internal combustion were created here. Then my friends got me involved in rebuilding some Allis Chalmers tractors. And I got hooked. Anyway the more I looked for info, the more I realized that at least as much automotive and perhaps even more heavy industrial equipment was made somewhere or some when in Wisconsin. Odd info: Like who built the largest (at the time) steam excavators and rock crushers for the Panama C****? Allis Chalmers. And AC built the largest steam turbines at one point - long before GE was a player. The page link below cites 150 engine manufacturers at one time or nuther. http://www.gasenginemagazine.com/gas-engines/wisconsin-gas-engine-companies
Not so sure about performance engines,(when and what type?) but the one clylinder lawn mower type was sold by the millions for years, now a small percentage of that market as Honda is the big supplyer in that market now.
Hi wicarnut.Check out their website. All sorts of performance engines for go karts,jr dragster and much more.Their 3.5HP single was putting out 10 HP in full race mode. Good luck.Have fun.Be safe. Leo
Ron built a number of other racing engines as well. Most of them can be seen on the Speedway Motors "Museum of American Speed" website. I believe the SOHC Popp marine engine was built in Milwaukee and was used in midgets. Also Frank Brisko built racing engines in the 30's and 40's including two midget engines, one an all aluminum version of the Ford tractor engine and the other a seemingly DOHC like an Offy but with 5 main bearings and individual valves operated hydraulically from a pump, thus eliminating any camshafts. Rajo built racing engines in Racine primarily derivations of Model T and Model A/B. Bill Willison built a small number of DOHC midget race engines in Milwaukee.
When talking racing engines you can't forget Harry Miller who was born in Wisconsin! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Miller_(auto_racing)
Case Tractor out of Racine. I Wiki'd and found that they built automobiles for a few years in the 1920's. Didn't know that.
Last time I talked with **** about that engine, it needed to be sleeved and had a problem with cam bearing area in crankcase. This was a while ago, in recent conversation nothing was said about Sesco engine, he has since purchased a Street legal Sprint Car, not sure if he got it registered to drive it here in Wi.
One of my favorite Jay Leno videos, see him demonstrate his 1918 Stutz Bearcat with Wisconsin T head 4 valve per cylinder engine.
Incidentally it is true that Harry Miller was a Wisconsinite and used to come back for summer vacations. He rented a cottage that came with a row boat. Being Harry Miller he was not content to row a boat around but could not modify it because it was not his. One year he came up with a small outboard motor that could be clamped on the back of the boat, his own invention. When his vacation was over he gave it to his neighbor Ole Evinrude.
Add jefferson motorcycles to the list. Made in jefferson wi. I didnt see briggs and stratton anywhere. Brown tractors were made in racine. Simplicity was part of allis chalmers in west allis. Chrysler had a few engine plants both car; marine and performance.
Harnischfeger (P&H) built a few diesels, mostly for their own cranes. Oddly there were 3 companies that built 4 wheel drive trucks, Clintonville FWD, Oshkosh and Jeffery (Nash) Quad
Someone already mentioned S&S Engines made in Viola, Wisconsin. Here is one of their big X-Wedge Engines they use in the new Morgan Three Wheeler. No shortage of power here and what a fantastic running and sounding engine! High Noon Speed Shop - Baltic, Ohio My Blog: https://ontheroadtonowhereville.wordpress.com/
Didn't see AO Smith mentioned yet. They developed the "motor wheel" for both 2 and 4 wheel applications.
APU in our UH34D helos was made in Wi. Think they were waukesha, same for our ground support APU's. As previously mentioned they have great cheese AND plenty of beer to chase it down!
The Harry Miler club event was this weekend at the Milwaukee Mile where they had a display of Sesco engines. Fascinating stuff!
