bought a new 1932 ford cowlvent gasket, it is almost 3/8" thick, the lid lays flat on my A cowl with no gasket [pic], with it the whole thing will stick up at least 1/4"... anyone else run into this...? anyone find a thinner one for sale ?
The one I got for my 33 truck was the same situation. I made a quick *** little jig thingy and used a new razor blade to slice half the height of it off.
I was told to do that but hate getting stiches... can you post a pic of the jig...? or even take a pic of a sketchpad print...
Might be easier to make a new one, maybe a old rubber inner tube that the local truck stop is going to throw away. Will cut easily with scissors.
The one on my 34 truck at first seemed too thick. But after being closed a while with the spring pressure on it, it seems to be pretty level now.
well there, I may help it out with a bungie cord to help pull down on it... and no blood. thanks boys...
No picture of the jig, it was just two little blocks of wood clamped down to a 2x6 I held the razor blade and pulled the cowl vent seal through it.
I've had the same problem on several cowl vent gaskets. I just close them up as well as I can, and eventually they will compress enough to close all the way.
Same thing on our 36 cowl vent. Just too high. It eventually compressed down and vent height is fine now.........
Had the same problem. Bought a Bob Drake one cos his stuff is supposed to be right and it was too thick plus it didn't fit the recess properly so made a template of the recess and cut one out of 3/16" neoprene.
Same issue with a Vintiques gasket. I'm probably going to fabricate my own. That vent sticking up when closed KILLS body lines.
Close the vent and it will compress,I replaced the one on my old beater and within a month it has taken shape. HRP
mine is a vintique, what glue, silicone did you use as some don't set up enough to stay under the gasket and ooze out from under it with tension on it?
...sometimes a gasket can be fab'd using a piece of the correct size vacuum hose... works great on some.
Need to go home and look in the body parts book, but I think they are all too thick for the same reason the rubber pads under the headlight bar are too thick...
Maybe they are too thick so they will fill the channel by slowly compressing into it... manufacturer doesn' t want customers to complain if they leak, regardless of how it looks... i'm hoping it collapses to half its thickness...
I just us the universal weatherstripping and put it toward the inside of the trough so the lid sits tight and it doesn't show from outside.
