What transmission came with the 223? What can be mated to the 223? Can a toploader pattern trans be fitted? Does the 223 bellhousing bolt pattern match any other Ford engines?

I've tried searching the internet with no luck. So I figure that someone here probably knows.

  2. Don't know the model number, but I got an old 3 speed for a 223 that I'm probably gonna sell. Trying to sell the 223 also. I'll try to find some numbers on the ******

I know this is an old post and the subject has been done to death but has anybody got the exact measurements of the 223 bell housing pattern
I have a 4 speed auto to replace the 2 speed which i will make my own adapter , I am in the UK and not going to spend upto $1000 bucks on a bought adapter for the 223 - 6 , I can change the engine and trans for something newer for that kind of money
I am just trying to same a bit of time as i want to get as much ready as i can before pulling the trans on mine, at the moment i am using it daily but will be working on it in the winter
    Thanks
    Dave

Hello Mr Dave, I don't have the bell housing bolt pattern you need, but thought I'd give you a bump back to the top.
You're right about the proud price of the Bendtsen's adapter kit, but I've been told their kit is very good quality.

  8. This is a partial truth.

When you say "8ba" we are referring to 1948-53 Flatheads (8RT, 8BA, EAB) irrespective of their displacement this last generation of blocks all have the same bolt pattern at the bell housings to the engine block.

During these years Ford had two transmission bolt patterns. The first is a 4 bolt transmission pattern, these were common for p***enger cars and some light duty trucks. In this instance the 223 bell housing will be able to receive the 4 bolt pattern transmissions for years 1948-53 (which you referred to as "8BA" transmission).

However, there is an 8 bolt pattern transmission that mates to the bell housing. This one is commonly occurring in the Ford trucks. I am currently trying to mate a Ford 223 to this 8 bolt pattern transmission on a 1952 F1.

I have yet to find someone who sells either (a) an adapter plate or (b) a custom bell housing.

You need a bell housing/ring from a 52 215 six.... they used the old style trans in the pickups.
