Does anyone have any ideas for putting a steel top in a model A? So far im not having much luck fitting one right.
Coupe? Tudor? Fordor? 28-29? 30-31? A little more info will help greatly. For our 30 coupe we used an 81 Malibu 4dr sedan roof skin turned 180°. Fit the curvature front to back and side to side.
I used a 20?? Dodge club cab pick up roof in my '30 coupe, no ribs... parts yard painted an x on everything they will be crushing... cab had an x... roof was $100.00 . . . note the black sharpie line... I marked about 1" outward from the insert ripple... I cut the top to be 1/4" wider than the roof to insert edge... the line lets me keep it centered without being able to see under it...
buddy used a sunroofless Volvo wagon roof in his boy's '30 Tudor... have the yard cut very carefully as you will need all of it left to right and front to back... .
Make your own if you have access to a big English wheel or power hammer or call Walden if you want one that fits perfect right to your door.
Used roof off a 67 Chevy 4dr HT, Trimmed to fit on the inside of the bead around the roof opening. Drops on with near perfect fit. Tack welded every couple of inches then the joint sealed. Roof was obtained from some local car guys parting car out, only thing left, ready to go to crushed. Even cut posts off car and then wouldn't accept anything for it. Painted then covered with 1/8" closed cell foam glued to roof then Model A repro decking glued to foam and tacked down around the edge like original. Finished off around the opening with repro aluminum trim available from Model A suppliers. Looks like original with a soft original feel but no problems with ballonning on the highway. Canuck
Before the make your own roof with your English wheel or power hammer came into vogue guys made a template of the shape they needed to have to look right and off to the wrecking yard they went. Usually if they have a section where they have the bodies lined up for the crusher the price drops a bit. At least at they yards I go to it does.
I have used late 60s mustang roofs for years. As many of these cars that have rusted away the roofs aren't that hard to come by and they fit well. I've done at least 20 of them.
I cut up an my old 99 Ford Falcon parts car yesterday for s**** and carefully removed the roof skin. I am planning on using it to make a Model A pickup back, but it has the perfect curvature for a roof center as well. I will also cut the sheet metal off the top of the hood and the trunk for the same reason. These late model wrecks are a dime a dozen and easy to source. I get a lot of them through my local s**** yard as well as our local rescue service once they have finished with them and I have been doing it for years.
