Wondered if we could start a thread about pics of HAMB friendly rally cars like stuff from Carrera Panamerica, Pikes Peak, etc? I'm fascinated by this. Or any other pics of 50's and older cars in race livery.
A quick Google image search here. https://www.google.com/search?q=the...ved=0ahUKEwjyzf60357WAhVX9WMKHQrZAMoQ_AUIFCgE
I saw these three local cars at the Vintiques NW nats in 2016. The Chevy coupe had competed in the Peking to Paris rally in the past few years I think the Ford may have run in Mexico in the Panam race.
Great idea with such a thread. I wish I could make the opportunity to attend this event one day. From what I've read, they love the old stuff and are sick and tired of newer stuff to the point where they have to limit entries of Porsche and Mustang cars.
Most of these race cars were driven to the events not towed and it could a be thousand or more miles, if they were lucky they could drive it back home.

By all means. This form of Motorsport should not be overlooked. In 1992 I built a replica of one of the Monte Carlo Valiants, even incorporating some of the rally equipment from the originals (kindly donated by Scott Harvey). I campaigned it for five years. If I can find some photos I will post them. Rallying in this country dates back (at least) to the first Press On Regardless Rally organized by the Detroit Region of SCCA in 1948. I didn't make it to that one, since it was the year of my birth, but did attend, work, or compete in many later iterations. Chuck
Group B is way OT but it was the last thing to happen in mainstream motorsport which even came close to sparking my imagination. I've sporadically tried to imagine a Group B - hot rod crossover since the early '90s, without success. I remember a Dutch(?) artist who did a series of illustrations of phantom '50s European rally cars influenced by the Group B cars, probably around 1990, including a DKW with a 2-stroke five and awd. I haven't been able to find them on the internet. Perhaps I should revisit this. I always liked the Group B cars' purposeful disregard for aesthetics; that sort of ungainly-badass attack helicopter vibe they've got. I wonder how that would go with some of the classic Carrera Panamericana cars. I suspect that a majority on here would hate it.

Great idea for a thread, I like it. Smokey's account of his Pan America exploits are priceless, a great read. The man had a way with words: http://lacarrera2007.blogspot.com/2009/03/smokey-yunicks-take-on-la-carrera.html
Carson,a long time member of the '54 Ford Club of America has driven his '54 Ford in the La Carrera Panamaricana and with his daughter,Lauren won their class several times. HRP
Sorry, this tablet won't send photos but here is another batch of great Google images of the Pan Americana Road Race (others also). Hershel McGriff is a local stock car legend and won the 1950 PARR in a 1950 Olds. From: http://www.legendsofnascar.com/hershel_mcgriff.htm Born December 14, 1927 in Bridal Veil, Oregon, Hershel McGriff launched his stock car racing career in September of 1945 at the dirt Portland Speedway finishing 13th in his family’s sedan. TIMELINE: In 1950, McGriff won the Pan American Road Race in Mexico in a 1950 Oldsmobile 88, with an average speed of 79.2 mph over 27 hours, 34 minutes, and 25 seconds. His payoff was more than $17,000. The same year McGriff made his NASCAR debut campaigning his #52 City of Roses Oldsmobile in the inaugural Southern 500 at Darlington where he finished 9th. I don't know if this is considered off topic, but Shelby built a Sunbeam Tiger for the English Rootes Group for rallying in the 1964 and 65 seasons https://shelbyamericancollection.org/cars/1964-rootes-works-rally-sunbeam-tiger/ Here's a 29 minute BBC documentary on the history of Rallying [including the early Monte Carlo Rally] at the 14.40 mark shows the intro of pace notes. [and shows the Sunbeam Tiger] fast forward to the 16.48 shows the game changer when all the crazy Scandinavians taught the world how to drive
I've driven those roads, lived right on the Pan American highway for 7 years. Its is not just the highways that get you. LOL
