Hey guys whats going on?! New to the site and have my first project pickup. Ive always wanted to fix up a car/truck growing up and finally got the opportunity to so I jumped on it! Purchased my 1960 F100 just about 2 weeks ago. This will be my first teardown and build.

Little rundown on it: Starts and drives, but about after 2-3 miles it cuts out and dies like its out of fuel. I replaced the fuel filter, and put a new fuel pump on it and it does the same thing. did a compression test and cylinder 1-140, 2-150, 3-95, 4-100, 5-120, 6-120, 7-110, 8-100. My transmission is also a 3spd fmx auto tranny and wont shift into 3rd gear. So I decided I would pull the engine and tranny and do new rings/pistons on the engine and send the tranny to get looked at. Can anyone identify this bellhousing?

My goal is to do a axle flip in the rear, crown vic front end, rebuild engine and trans, paint the truck all white, new gauges, black rims w/chrome hubcaps, and wood bed.

  2. Cool and welcome.....gas tank is most likely stopped up....get a new one or blast clean the one ya got....after that engine build !

  3. Your trans is very likely shifting into 3rd, it's first gear you're not seeing. First, it's not a FMX unless it's been swapped in; those didn't come out until '68. Most likely it's a Fordomatic, which is a three-speed but starts out in second gear except if you hammer the throttle from a stop or manually shift it into low. Shift pattern is PRNDL. It might be a Cruiseomatic, which has a PRND2D1L pattern. D2 it starts in 2nd like the Fordomatic, D1 it starts in first. L is low. The bell looks to be a early air-cooled Fordomatic type for trucks only. The air cooled trans used a two-piece torque convertor with a finned aluminum cover. That bell doesn't necessarily mean you have the air-cooled trans as the Fordomatic (both air cooled and conventional cooled) and Cruisomatic could share bells.

I have a 1960 F100 with a 460 but these trucks dont match the definition of a traditional hotrod

  6. Yes, it's a Cruise-o-matic or Ford-o-matic bellhouseing for a Y block but you knew that. If it is a Ford-o-matic or a cruise-o-matic you can swap in a FMX but watch out for the differences in the converter and flex plate. You may have to swap front pumps, can't remember and don't want to tell you misinformation so do some reasearch on the internet. Check the Ford Barn.

  7. lots of other F1 builds on here that meet the traditional guidelines apparently. You can search for them in the search section. Before jumping on that front end choice I would look at Industrial Chassis in AZ. He is a member here and offers perhaps a better choice. Seems the Crown Vic front end is a little wide which means you will have to run a strong offset flat rim which may not look right. Just saying. Here is the web site for Industrial

Those wipers would drive me nuts.......does it rain in CA?
Welcome aboard, pay attention to the rules:D

    Nice truck,
As others have said, the trans is a fordomatic, starts in 2nd and shifts once unless you manually put it in low.

I have basically the same driveline in my 54 Country Squire and my dad has the same in His 63 F100

    Love the Y block

  10. Welcome to the site. I had a CV front end to install but bailed because of limited wheel choices. Went trad with Nostalgia SIDS axle and lower springs. If your the independent type, Industrial Chassis has a great reputation (as previously said).
There is good lowering info on Nostalgia Sids website www.droppedaxles.com

  11. please do yer homework before you cut that truck,...
