I have two Ford original clamp on turn signal controls, one from a 49 and one from a 50. All the wiring diagrams I find have different color wire than mine. Both of these controls have blue, green, orange, brown, red and yellow wires. All the diagrams I found have different colored wires. Can anyone help me with this, I,m trying to connect this to a Haywire harness.

Steve great write up: question, what is best/easy way to identify the wires that connect to turn signal switch, I have hand full of wires and do not know an easy way to figure out where each connection should be, thanks
this is a 1950 ford that I converted to 12 v few yrs ago, everything worked then, I am re soldering wires on turn signal switch now, next step is to make correct connections. by the way we are almost neighbors, live in Federal Way

  4. I have little faith in wire color codes as I've been burned too many times... So I meter everything to physically verify what it is. As to the wires going to the column, easiest method I've found is to just check them. One will be brake light power, that should be hot any time the pedal is pressed. Turn signal power should only show with the key on if it's wired in correctly. To find the individual light wires, use an alligator clip and tie each one to a hot 12V source (one at a time) and simply see which one lights up. One big advantage to doing it this way is you 'prove' everything in testing, if there are other problems they'll show up here, not after it's all connected and doesn't work.

'49 and '50 Fords did not come with turn signals.
1951 was the first year. You will need double filament bulbs.
But the bulb socket is probably not made for two filaments.
Of course, I may be wrong.

  6. All of them have double filament bulbs at the rear; brake and tail lights. As the brake light does double-duty as the turn, it's covered. All of the magic is in the turn switch. You might have issues with the front park lights, but I haven't seen that as an issue as most used the same sockets, with the turn just not used.
