I found a sound clip of a really nice sounding 1954 chevy. I don't know what type of exhaust or engine it has. I'm looking to get the same exact sound, and am probably buying an 53 or 54 chevy with an inline 6 235. Can anyone give me advice on how to get a similar sound? Am I dreaming of getting that kind of sound out of a 235? My initial guess is to have fenton headers, and duals with gl***packs closer to the headers. Heres a link to the sound clip that I am referring to: http://web.mit.edu/dsurfer/www/54engine.mp3
I have a 51 chevy deluxe, running a 56 235 in it and have experimented with the perfect exhaust for a few years. Initially I ran fenton headers into full length lakes pipes... You want to talk about a loud inliner! Wow. It was alot of fun.. but took it's toll on the hearing.. and also got tired of living in fear of the man. I put some baffles in the pipes.. I bought them.. but after opening the package.. they looked so easy to make I had a knot in my stomach for a few days.. Anyhow.. the baffles mellowed the open pipes a lot.. but still was just a bit too loud. This spring I bought a few stainless steel chore boy scrubbers and stuffed them in ahead of the baffles.. and voila.. sounds perfect. Enclosed is a picture of the baffle I bought. Good luck .... an inline chevy six has a sound all its own.. I like it.
So, you want your car to sound like Mike Ness'? Loose the L6 and drop in a small-block with a set of 16" gl***packs.
Exactly thats a clip from Mike Ness'.... I don't know yet what I am buying, but most likely something with an L6 until I have more money to but a small block in it. I was curious to know if I could get that sound with an L6 and gl***packs
No, you'll need to ad more "water" to that sound to get an idea of what the Inline-6 will sound like, as they're much more raspier and high-pitched. To tone down the highs, you can run a longer gl***pack, or use something like Mellow Tones, Smithy's, or even HushMasters. Otherwise, get ready for the Brrrraaaaaaaaap!
I've got a '54 sedan with an .080" over 261. I'm running dual 1 bbls with a pair of Cliffords shorty split headers. Up until about a year ago, I had 1 7/8" duals with 24" Smitty's and 18" Echo cans. That thing would rap at an idle! It was kool for the first 4-5 years, but then it got real old. You'd go out of your mind on a long haul. So, the week before the Pile Up last year, I had new 2" pipes bent and actual mufflers put on. We made the 6 hr. trip to Morris, and it was nice to actually be able to hear myself think. The best part is, it still has that 6 rap when you let off of it. But it can be quiet if Johnny Law is around.
