Okay, I've got a 350 block and reground crank at the machine shop as I type, I've also got a set of 416 heads. Now I've got a bunch of questions.... He's gonna bore to .30 over, heads will get cleaned up and ported. Here's the question, I was just going to leave it to him to order pistons, rods and the like, but he asked what compression I'm shooting for. I have no idea! Nor do I know how that will effect everything else I'm going to have to buy, intake, carb setup etc. I want to be able to run on pump gas, but I also want a little zing if you get my drift. I have no plans whatsoever to drag this car, so I just want something fun. Help a brother out and you may have a place to crash during te Paso Show! 210
Put it around 9.5:1, that way you can run pump gas on those iron heads and not have to retard the hell out of the timing to keep it from blowing itself up. You could go a little higher if you're running a lumpy cam that will bleed off some cylinder pressure.
If you're running anything less than 230* duration at .050" - which will have a noticeable thump in a small block - then I'd stick to 9:1 to 9.5:1.
just match everything to the heads so it works together with the small valves and springs. 460/480 lift, 212/220 duration somewhere in that neighborhood for decent top end. too much cam and around town is no fun cause you need a stall converter and lower gears to take advantage, robbing highway cruisin.
