Thinking about installing stainless or chrome rocker moldings on my 50 chevy styleline. When the owner before me painted it, all the clip holes were filled in. After doing some research I see the original molding clips fit in a rectangle slot, not sure if the slot were welded shut. Can a person mount the clips any other way, or any other suggestions. Also the first front and back clip is bolted.

Those slot type trim holes are generally used when access is limited.
I have a car that required slotted holes, tried free handing them then found the oem style clips were very hard to find.

Auveco is one of the go-to suppliers with the best distribution system for oem and the body repair industry.

There's a couple 49-54 chevy sites that sell the rocker molding and the original type rectangle clips. So if I went with there rocker molding would probably have to use the clips also, but wondering if the clips couldn't be anchor with screws instead of trying to find the old slots.

Yes, good detective work helps, if you can find clips (sometimes a spring loaded universal style) that will take a sheet metal screw you can get lucky, just make sure the screw head doesn't dent the moulding. Many of the clips on the market have a threaded stud that require access from behind to fasten with a nut.
A tip that was given to me is to drill one small test hole and give it a light hit with a small center punch to dimple/flare the hole inward, then test the applicable screw, this will give a better hold.
If that seems to work proceed with the rest of the locations.

This is the kit for rocker molding clips I found the same one on 2 sites. The 4 ends have the bolt on clip which I think I can figure out placement, the other are the ones I'm thinking about attaching with screws.

  6. well, they look like they are deep enough that a screw head would not interfere with the trim itself. do you have the rocker trim? try it out.

just thought, you will have to get the mounting clips lined up straight when mounting. That is the only thing that I can think of that would cause problems.

I think the idea of screwing them in sounds like it would work.

Have ordered nothing as of yet, wanted to see what would work before I did. Will probably do the screws in the middle ones. From the research and pictures I found there should be some kind of filled holes I can see from the back side where the front and back clips go with the bolt. Hopefully should find holes and set bolt clips and will have line then for installing mid ones. In a neck brace at this time from surgery so getting things lined up. Thanks for help.

the clips with the studs go through the front fenders (x 2 each side) and screwing the other type to the rockers works well.

It's been ages since I did mine, but from memory all you have to do to make the stock clips work with a screw is flatten the tabs that would have originally clipped into the rectangular slots.
