I am looking for a daily driver anyone have any ideas? Its gotta be cheap. And I dont need any evil *******s telling me about their deuce coupe or some sweet ride they are so privileged to drive everyday.
49-53 chevy..... cheap, reliable, easy to upgrade should you choose.... 49-54 plymouth / dodge, unique lookin, just as cheap and nearly as reliable, flatties are GREAT..... shoebox ford.... see em for $1500-2000 driving, and while you fix it up in the end you can be lookin at a 10k ride pretty easy, and parts are cheap... eaerly 60s cars like falcon or something cheap to fix and buy me, any car for the most part is cheap, i find deals, LOL... but those are decent options..
Late late fifties to early mid sixties full size GM. Especially if ya don't mind more doors...there's a lot of overlooked stuff there that can be had pretty easy. Olson
Hey, What about an early 60's falcon ranchero? Small decent gas economy and it is a pickem up so you can haul parts and what not. Otto
I just thought about this too 1957-60 F-100. People almost give them away, they are rough and tumble old trucks. Not to mention that I have a certain fondness for them. Otto
I would love a 54 chevy. All good suggestions I love old trucks most of the ones i see are all apart or in not running condition I am looking for something to be able to drive and not have to put a bunch of money into from the get go. What about corvairs? I have allwaya liked the looks of a two door corvair I seen one for $500 drivable too. Any one have any experince with these?
C"MON now you live in RENO there are soooooomany old cars around here!! go look in all the allys in NW reno!!
Corvairs should be cheap, I know there's plenty in junkyards here and you can't seem to give them away. Late 50's/early 60's anything especially moor-door is pretty cheap, only the hardtops and convertibles are bringing the bucks. If you poke around you can find nice cars pretty cheap, so if you want something specific you may as well keep an eye open for those. I found a running '50 Chevy last year for $200.
Since your in Reno,I know where theres a building full of old cars, right down town, overlooking the river, just about a block up river from Virginia st. Ya might have trouble getting them out the door though. On a semi-seriouse note, mid 60's f100,straight 6,3 on the tree.Put an electronic ignition in it for reliability.paint that ****er factory mint green and you have a clone of my truck. I have no idea how many times the clocks turned over on this truck, but I havent been able to kill it yet! And I get around 16-18 mpg around town, and 20-22 on the freeway. Parts when I need them are cheap and plentyful. my .02 bucks worth! R.R.
anywhere in particular I should look REnoRAT? 6 door police car? I was going to buy a 1989 Dodge diplomat cop car but i was waiting for the guy to get the ***le. I have been buggin the guy for 3 weeks and he had said from the beginning the ***le was in the mail. i drove to check it out. he got it smogged yesterday and now he says somone who doesnt care about the ***le is interested in it. SO i am pissed and looking elsewhere for a hoopty
hey maybe you are right rubberrodder I should just sneak into the museum and gank the james dean merc.
I concur with the Falcon/Ranchero vote and will add early Comet to the pie. The 60/61''s are a**** the last US steel with real big honkin' fins and they were not branded Mercury anywhere because they were supposed to be Edsels!. The light unibody and somewhat modern handling is my choice for daily unless it's a really nice day, then the old car is the ticket. Powerband
I built a pretty neat 54 Chevy a few years ago. Once I got done with it, I made up my mind that they are an all-or-nothing car. Personally, I wanted to drive it, and drive it a lot (I actually wound up putting about 20k miles a year on it). Problem is, with the early Chevies, you have to updte it all or nothing basically. If you swap the stovebolt out, you're going to wind up putting a later trans into the car at the same time, which requires a new rear end because of the torque tube. That, along with the 6 volts and vacuum wipers, all add up to a lot of work to build a smooth daily cruiser. I did the math, and to rebuild the front suspension, steering, and brakes to new condition would have cost near as much as a Mustang II swap. I wound up doing the MII, and got disc brakes, rack and pinion, and all around better driving car for my trouble. I'd recomend a 55 or newer GM if this all seems like too much for you. They are V8 ready, seperate driveline, and 12 volts to start with.
i got a 64 cutl*** as the project on the side of the house so maybe i am one rung below you guys on the poverty ladder?
What cheap to you we are cheap and different levels of Cheapness? I drive my 35 ford truck everyday when its warm enough and I live in the south. It was 80 dagrees today....But I need to sell it you should start by looking in the For sale board lot of cheap stuff there. later
I still say '59-'64 full size GM, but this is prob'ly worth takin' a look at. http://reno.craigslist.org/car/152083038.html As might this...hard to tell from the ad, but these can be really cool. http://reno.craigslist.org/car/150352765.html Olson
I'll cast my vote for Early to mid sixties Falcons as well. They can be found dirt cheap, parts are readily available, and with a six or small V8 you should be able to get around 20 mpg out of them. About a year and a half ago I bought a '62 Comet for 700 bucks, new brakes, ran and drove great. When I sold it i missed it so much I bought a '64 Falcon wagon which I am now driving. I may be replacing the wagon soon though, with a '64 sedan with a 260 V8. You might say I'm a little fond of these cars.
