I have some Quadrajet carbs, 17085580 and 7045562. 17085580 1708 - 1980's 5 - 1985 5 - Quadrajet 4barrel CA Emissions 8 - ? 0 - Automatic Transmission 7045562 704 - 1970-75 5 - 1975 5 - Quadrajet 4barrel CA Emissions 6 - Pontiac 2 - Automatic Transmission (Information from http://www.carburetion.com/quadnumber.htm http://www.carburetion.com/search.htm) My question is what is BOP? Everywhere I look them up and read they say they are BOP or BoP. I've read that it means Balance of Power?
Oh and also the 17085580 says it's Chevy/GMC truck other sites don't show the 7th digit going up to 8... 0, 1, and 2 all indicate Chevrolet. 4 - Buick 5 - Olds 6,7 - Pontiac
I read this also, but my Buick Qjet (#7045244) don't mention anything about "BOP" I also have a #7042208 1972 Chevy/GMC truck auto trans, mention s nothing about BOP. But 17085589 says Chevy/GMC truck BOP
I guess I'm just confused why my #17085580 says Chevy/GMC Truck and BOP. Im trying to sell them all, What would you advertise it as? "Came in a '85 General Motors vehicle, with a Automatic Transmission!"
BOP=Buick Olds Pontiac, and it refers to the transmission bell housing bolt pattern, which is different from Chevy.
Here is some information on the 17085580. The aftermarket uses BOP in the descriptions because this carb is grouped with others very similar and as you can see at the bottom of the page, trucks and cars used the same general carb.
BOP is Buick, Olds, Pontiac. Not balance of power. Gawd the interweb has sure screwed things up for us hasn't it. I would define Pontiac but it has a racial slur so I can't.
That's how I know how to spell Pontiac. Chevy and Cadillac will have fuel inlet to the pass side and Buick Pontiac and Olds will have the fuel inlet to the front.
B-O-P or BOP refers to the GM B-O-P Assembly Division, the plants where they assembled Buicks, Oldsmobiles and Pontiacs in one factory. It is not slang and was a General Motors corporate entity, and is now loosely used for parts ID, car shows (featuring - you guessed it, Buick, Olds and Pontiac cars), and other GM-related purposes. The May, 1955 banquet photo below (see the big "B O P" letters?) includes Marshall H. Boden, at the time the Manager of the B-O-P Assembly Plant in Linden, NJ, and the bio is from his 1969 retirement from GM after heading up (since 1967) the B-O-P plant in Fremont, CA. TG
Now that is interesting. I guess that explains why Cadillac is not included. I was just discussing that with someone else. Good info.
I've been rebuilding Quadrajets for the public since the 70s. A pretty good rule of thumb is that if the fuel line comes in from the front, it's B/O/P 0r Caddy. If it comes in from the side, it's Chevrolet.
This is the Production Schedule board for the B-O-P Assembly Plant at Linden, NJ for May, 1955, with plant manager Marshall H. Boden and Jackie Gleason. For the purposes of this publicity still, the Olds and Pontiac lettering was removed, but the cumulative for "B O P" production is clearly shown at the bottom. We will never know why Mr. Boden is giving the finger to the number for Friday the 13th, May, 1955. The "Great One" was at Linden to pick up his new Roadmaster Convertible, a perk of Buick's 3-year sponsorship deal for his new TV show that debuted that fall, "The Honeymooners." Gleason attended a luncheon with management, toured the factory, "worked" on the assembly line, and visited with workers and nurses the day of his visit. TG
in 1978 GM called all motors GM motor produced in a GM plant so they could but the chevy design motors in any GM car olds in trans ams , buick V6 in any GM car added 1 to carb numbers to identify that change
Ive heard "BPO" slang for buick, pontiac, olds transmissions. guess the crowd I ran with had to be different
BOP in automotive terms is of course, Buick-Olds-Pontiac. In oilfield terms it refers to a Blowout Preventer.
My wife and I use the temp bop as code when we need to leave and "bump our privates". That was her idea, it works. I tried I really did try to tell her B O P was short for Buick olds Pontiac but she distracted me and won.
Some great info, I must say these forums are pretty great full of some smart people. I don't have photos of them right now but I'm certain the fuel inlet is in front. I'll post up some photos later. Does anyone want to buy a Quadrajet?
