Since it's just around the corner of hitting print I can't hold back giving a peek at what's to come with my first installment on my new "Dream Truck". This is the sketch Thom Taylor came up with per my description (finished drawings are in the mag). VERY sorry to Jimmy Smith (jeem) who came up with the first sketch, but since I was piggy-backing my story on to one Thom already wrote and illustrated I thought it made sense to have his work accompany my story so comparisons to different artists didn't become the focus over what the drawings actually are. The other trucks Thom illustrated are AWESOME and all HAMBers should keep an eye out for it (even if you have to bug a buddy to show you their copy). Still looking for some So-Cal shops that might want to get involved with a couple of the stories- nothing too huge that could not be reasonably done in anywhere from a couple days to a week. Thanks Jim
That's a super fine sketch. Now I'm itching more than usual for my issue of R&C to come in the mail. Can't wait to see pics of the actual truck.
Is it chopped @ 2" and sectioned @ 3"? LooksAWESOME! I've always liked those trucks when they're tastefully customized. look forward to seeing the REAL DEAL. Josh
Chopped 3", Channeled 3" (cab and front clip only), 3" clipped off the bottom. Gives it cool proportions without ruining the flavor.
I see now that you've said your channeling the cab and front clip, is that how you plan to make the body line, line up that way. And I see your making the rear fenders longer towards the cab? Is the truck a long bed? And the doors will be shorter at the bottom? And are you really going to remove the vent windows? Just curious, I can't wait to follow along with this build!
Hey Jim, Is the cab you picked up here in Osos from J and I going to be the basis for the truck? Honestly, if it is, that is kinda cool. The Dream Truck has a spot in custom history and it sure would be nice to know I helped load the sequel on to the back of a trailer with your dad. See ya in Paso, True
I'm looking at the sketch thinking, "Looks like a lowered truck, what's so dreamy about that?" Sign of a good custom. I doesn't LOOK customised!
It will be raked- my rubber is actually a little more staggered than that. Yes Brootal, my idea was to make it better- without slapping it in people's face that it has been customized. Fins? Yes, but those are phase II- this is phase I. Rear wheels too far back? No, the wheel base had not been altered from a short wheel-base truck. Just the useless step area has been removed by extending the rear fender forward (like the Kopper Kart- a nod to that klassic kustom). This isn't an exact blue print, but is very close to the proportions and look I'm after. I wanted to cross the feel of the early classy customs with the creations done in the design studio by GM. It's more of a "what if" from 1955, than a late-fifties side-show custom.
Looks cool Jim, It looks good with the vent windows eliminated- I did that on the 3" chop I did on Scott Matneys 55 [shown In R&C]..... That is a close to "not gonna work" situation but it IS Do-able..... PM me if the chop causes you any trouble,Ive done several, and I'd like to help............
Jim, Jim baby, you know I still love you.... I've been so hammered lately and I'm way stoked to see Thom T. doing it, it'll be GRRRRRREAT* *Tony the Tiger
Thanks Jimmy- I just wanted the stuff to "match" - you know some of the other stuff we've talked about is still waiting for your touch. Those "pelt cars" are waiting when you have the time. Thanks Jim
Jim, Come take a look @ this one, I did this one along with Paul & Jim @ Cook's Machine Works-Parent of Cyclone. This has a 76-79 Caddy Seville front clip with discs up front & ultilizes the very front frame horns of the original frame for mounting points. It was originally a small window, but I talked Paul into swapping out the cab for a big window that became available, we stuck the original cab in the back of the shop & locked it, One morning we came in & it was gone! I still needed to swap a bunch of parts off of it=pissed me off. It runs a 12 Toms Differential/Cooks rear end with pull outs & has the prerequisite 350/700r4 eng-trans combo. I opted for the emerald green but the painter talked Paul into the lighter beige=(he regrets it). I found the rolled pan & did the exhuast around the corner @ Atlantic Muffler, made sure that I used some Hot Rod tricks with the 37 Ford tail lites & shifter mechanism. THis is a very sedate looking truck, but I wish you could have seen it when it showed up to the shop=Lol!!!! Works In Progress
