This place in Hollywood, Tiny Naylor’s, was the place to go on our cruising forays into the LA-Hollywood locales during the early years, 1960-63. It was always packed with cool cars from all over. The lure of being in the edge of what was known as downtown Hollywood, it was a cool place to cruise, park and eat. Not only was it a hangout for a lot of the LA area hot rodders, but it was located on the Sunset Blvd. that led to the ocean at Santa Monica. That was a great cruise in itself.

Our complete circle was to go down Sunset Blvd. to Santa Monica, down PCH through Manhattan Beach/Redondo Beach and sometimes stopping at the Parasol Restaurant in Torrance for one last quick coffee and snack before heading back to Long Beach.

In the mid to late 60’s during the Summer of Love, this place rocked, but was a little on the conservative side of what was going on just down the street. We liked it because of the locale and the food. But, the atmosphere of cruising seemed out of place during those turbulent times, 65-70.

My wife’s initial reaction (during the dating scene) to the drive to “Hollywood” was awesome. Later on, she would rather go to other places less “bright.” Although, in the wee hours of the morning, anyplace with coffee/steak/eggs was OK in our books.

HISTORICAL NOTES:

Tiny Naylor’s was one of California’s original family style restaurants founded by W.W. “Tiny” Naylor. He got his name “Tiny” because he was 6’4” and weighed 320 lbs.

Designed by Douglas Honnold in 1949, this establishment remained open until 1984 when it was demolished to make room for a shopping center and parking lot…”
