Technical Chevy six and gearbox, need gearbox ID and help

No luck, nothing loose. One complete '52 truck, but not parting it.
I have no camera for a while, or I'd at least take a picture for you.

 

This seems too obvious, but what is wrong with a European 4 speed or 5 speed? A 4th or 5th speed would be a big help in getting a decent performance out of the low revving Chev. There must be lots of them around, they will take the torque of the mighty Chev six, they come with a floor shift, and they are compatible with the open drive shaft of your Nissan rear axle. What kind of trans does the Nissan have? If it is not suitable there must be plenty of old Volvos and BMWs in junk yards near you.

 

I choose it because I had it, and it looked good.
And it would look Era Perfect.


But if I chooses to not run it, I got this;



Volvo M400, converted to a top shifter, from a Volvo 122.



But it looks odd. I find the 3 speed fits the look of the build.

But if I can't make it work, I got the M400 under my bench.
I also have a M46, but I'm unsure if a OD would fit the look/Era.

The Nissan might have had a 5 speed, but I don't have it.

 

FYI. The later trans is probably a 55-57 pass trans. It has the standard ratios as it has the necked down input. The truck trans has a recessed speedo drive. The gears it has go way back. The gears have a good chance of fitting in the early trans.
Look up X Shift made by Offy to use 55 up gears in a floor shift case. It used the shifter you have.

Are you saying that the gear set from the top right box will fit my 1946 3 speed truck trans?

I tried to build an X Shift. I found two older transmissions and welded plates on the back. I can't remember if I had to cut the orignal tail housing off or used some cases with removable housings. I friend faced the plates off and bored the bearing hole. The gears looked identical.

 

That is cool, is this the 1955-??

I'm not well versed in transmission from Chevy. I just want to make sure I understand it before I gut my one three speed to save another, lol.

That trans is a '55 - '59 truck - note the lower mount bolts thread into the case.
So, the 3/4 ton half shaft idea yesterday is not looking good. That shaft is over 2 feet long.
All those Chevy 3 speed gears look alike - it's when they don't quite fit together that trouble ensues ...

 

Is to feet going to be an issue?

Wheelbase 107" (IIRC), engine sits over front axle with a couple of inches (lets say 3), engine is 36"ish long, trans and bellhousing is 12"ish, so 2 feet of drive shaft would be no big issue, there should still be room to slice'n'dice and adapt to Nissan rear?

 

you have the parts to try to replicate what my dad and uncle did, in the fifties. they cut the top off the 37 truck tranny and welded it to the top of the 55 3 speed.

 

I remembered that one. But yours is a car transmission? With better gears then mine, right?

 

first gear in mine is way too high i wish i had the lower first gear.

 

What rearend are you running now? And tires?

 

3:70's and 28.5" tires. believe it or not even with the 4:56 gears, first seamed way too high but the motor is not made for low end torque so that may have something to do with it.

I know this might be a silly question, but if three Springers was so common at some point, and some ran Chevy front and engine, but swapped to the Model a rear; does that mean Ford Torque tube fits a Chevy trans?
And even my 1946 chevy 3 speed?

 

I've been eating my options on the whole gearbox deal, and I'm still leaning towards the 46 box, but I'm still strong out for parts in Denmark.

So I've been thinking about X-shifting my 1946 gearbox.

But what driveshaft will fit the 55-57? Any of the car ones, or only truck?

Will Th350 or powerglide driveshaft fit?

What is the different between driveshaft and propshaft?

 

the th350 drive shaft should fit. i recently took a 55 chevy three speed out of a truck and put a 1997 4L60 tranny in and the drive shaft from the 55 fit the newer tranny.
