  1. I didn't - we had Safeway, Fred Meyer and Prairie Market close by, plus the Big B down the street and Watson's Pharmacy for candy.

Good Lord do I remember stuff like this.Riding in the back of our 63 Pontiac wagon. The herd of Filbert Street kids, all friends.McDonalds seemed like manna from heaven! Haven't eaten at one for many years, likely never will again.

  4. Thriftways were all over the place.
We thought it was great when one opened in Milwaukie, almost right across the street from Dicks Supermarket, one of the last big independent supermarkets in town.Drove Dick's out of business .Only one independent survived, Dierengers.
At the time it seemed great, now it seems like a harbinger of sweeping change in America, Corporations were starting to take over, transforming us into one soulless homogenized city strip mall stretching from coast to coast, where everything is the same everywhere. Where money is ALL that matters.
I like the old way.If only we had known.

    What Maggie said Gary.
I recall the Tradewell name, don't remember where though.
Maggie, we had a Prairie Market here local too.
Yes on the Thriftways, my wife worked as a florist in a couple some years back.

  11. That's Colombia Bowl! I know it survived at least to the 1960's, maybe in a different location? I might have even gone there.I don't remember, ANYONE?

  12. We had a Safeway in Milwaukie, and an old red brick one on 52'nd off Woodstock.
The Safeway seemed really modern when it was built.Long torn down now, I think they built a newer one.
Don't know. Haven't lived in Portland since 1986.My folks house in Milwaukie is owned by somebody else now.
Grew up there, kinda painful. Hardly anybody left now except my older brother.
It's nothing at ALL like it was in the 50's and 60's. God I loved it growing up!
Watching your life just fade away is something.

Lakeside Speedway, Denver Colorado, 1950- Check out the cool Mid West Trade School score board !
My coolest memories was the midget races at Lakeside. My dad was the superintendent of Midwest Trade School, and Midwest sponsored an offy powered midget, Brad Bradford as one of the drivers. Every Saturday evening we would go to midget races. One of the high points of my life was on my fourth birthday party... dad took me to the midget races before time trials and let me sit in his lap while he drove a few hot laps around the track and let me drive!! I can still smell the alcohol in my nose right now! Mid West 1950.png
