One thing cool about the 396 crank is to drop it in a stock bore 454 block and you'll have a 427....

...with some work. But that's how I built my 427. It runs ok.

  3. any used engine and transmission that come with no guarantee as to condition is a core. Core price for the combo would be in the 500-800 dollar range. They all ran before they were pulled just like all SBCs are corvette motors. This is not to call you a liar, I don't know you and you could be as honest as the day is long, it is just a statement of fact.

Personally I have been thinking about building a 396, cause I like 'em. A lot of guys don't. They are not nearly as popular as 427-502 motors.

****** I have one of those if you want.;)

  5. I got a set of heads, that 413 ^^^ is going to need heads. The ones for motor homes came with peanut port heads.

@jimmy six is talking about building a HyBrid SBC, although unless he is swimming in cash he is dreaming with that 200R to back it up. We exploded a 200R with my 355 a couple of years ago. They are good transmissions but it take a lot to make them hold much torque.

you found a person that really needed what you had. You need to go to church and thank the lord he sent you that person.
I have raced and blown up too many 396's to pay that unless it was a fresh one with receipts.
I dug one out of the back of a speed shop in the mid 70's. paid $50 for it because nobody wanted it way back then. Stuck it in my Camaro so I could sell it after I blew up my open chambered 427 super stock motor.

Thanks. I was reading up on the 396 before. My bro has a book on them he has to dig out for me. Like I said the crank does need a cut due to a spun bearing. I have it partially apart. Heads are supposed to be good 454 closed chambered pieces.

No..... Dart Manufacturing SBC 4.125-4.165 bore block with a ultralite **** 3-7/8" stroke. Killer on 1/2 mile dirt all iron engines. If your not using one, your lookin' at the backend of a guy who is.....

  10. I have a 67 350HP 396, that I removed from the original Chevelle SS In 1970. My engine came equipped with the Holley carb on a cast iron manifold. I have never seen, in any publication or live, a 325 horse engine with anything other than the quadrajet. There is nothing the matter with a properly maintained Quadrajet. There are a lot of super stock records that were set running this carb, and as long as a person doesn't **** with the carb, you can get better mileage than with the Holley. ( I am a Holley fan, so I don't sat that lightly).
As mentioned above, the cam is also different, as well as the compression ratio, and another difference is that the 350 hp version has a forged crank rather than a cast crank.

Mine is a 961 block what I found on that is 2 bolt main which would only be 325 hp. Correct?

yeah, 2 bolt blocks were used for the 325 and 350/360 hp models. The 375/425 version got the 4 bolt blocks, along with forged pistons, rectangular port heads and other goodies.

  13. I have a no fail way of knowing, I have the original tic-toc tach with the redline for the 350hp.
The 325 engine will have the painted valve covers, and the covers won't have the oil drip strips welded into the underside. The 350 hp had factory chrome covers with the strips.
A 325 hp engine, will be a 2 bolt. There are conflicting reports, but my understanding is, that the 350 is also a 2 bolt, but the difference will be the pistons, heads, and forged crank. The 350 hp engine will also have the high volume oil pump.
It is easy to check whether the engine is a 4 bolt, by checking above the oil filter to see if there are plugs to mount something such as an external oil cooler.
I forgot to mention, the 350 hp version can come equipped with a Quadrajet carb.

pretty sure you'd find the chrome valve covers, with drippers on the 325 hp motors, although I don't know if they were only used on some car models/years. I have a bunch of those covers in terrible condition, they were very common.

  15. I am doing a lot of this out of memory. I have been fooling with Chrysler stuff for quite a few years now. Some '65 and '66 396-325's did come with Holley's. Why I don't know, but they did. Also in '65 and '66 there were no 396-350 motors. There was a 360 horse and it only came in Chevelle's. In '67 the rating was changed to 350. But again it only came in Chevelle's. Also, the 350/360 Holley's were about 650 cfm. But I don't think the 325 carbs were that large.

I too have one of the IVH coded 396 blocks. No date code cast into the rear, it is stamped on the pan rail surface. Dec, 1965. I bought the engine complete years ago, so I have the heads, 97 cc, and the cast iron Holley manifold. I used the steel crank in a 427. One thing that I haven't seen on any other of my blocks is that the tops of bores have a notch cut in for valve clearance. Much like a truck 409 has. I have an old engine book that says this same block was used for 427's, just bored to size.

  18. Same carb..325 or 360 hp. 585 /600 Holley ..Whatever you like to call it.
I've seen several Holley equipped 325/396 Impalas .Holley casting manifold and all.
You want to look at the 66 327/275. Three different carb styles on that one!

Was the date code down on the side?

  20. How about Chrysler 318's with a Q-jet in the 80's ?
    Or, 70-71 429 Fords with Q-jet?
Or, 74 460 fords with Thermoquads?

You guys say 396's are not sought after.
If you needed a Vin numbered block out of a 65 Corvette or a 65 Chevelle Z-16 (Google it) you probably would be willing to trade your first born for one.

FWIW, going through some castoff GM tech bulletins years ago, I clearly remember that
it was stated that some early 66 low-perf 396s may be encountered with 4 bolt mains.

There are a few of the 396 blocks are desirable to restorers , like the 65 version and the 375 hp version, but the run of the mill 325 hp station wagon or pick up truck blocks are not . Not many nut and bolt restorations on 67 Impala 4 door wagons.
Many big blocks got replaced during the energy crisis in the 70's . small blocks got installed and the big block got stuck in the corner of somebody's shop.
My older brother pulled his 390 hp 427 out of his 66 vette and put a 283 in it. So he could afford to drive it. Got over 25 mpg with that vette. Reinstalled it after the fuel shortages were over many did not.
I went to the auto auction in Denver in 1973 and you could buy a big block car cheaper than you could buy a Vega.

My 396 has been all over. Got it from my cousin after he wrecked his '67 Chevy panel truck. The bellhousing is in my '59 Ford, so is the flywheel. The 396 went into my Islip Nova stock car and ran strong for 2.5 seasons. Had an L88-ish Chet Herbert cheater cam in it, solid lifter. Now it will be rearing its ugly head once again.

When I was about 11-12yrs old, the local hot shoe up the road bought a brand new '66 SS396 Chevelle. Headers, 4.56, and I'm not sure, but most likely street tires (maybe cheaters), and it was well into the 13's. Fast car for the times.
Had a chance to buy it, early '70s. BB was pretty wore out, showing 11K mi. or so, still clean, $800....:(

The 1965 Corvette had a 425 horse 396.... I never did find any info on that motor... Was it a 4-bolt block with all the goodies???

    Sweeeeet!:)
    Thanks Larry! :)

  30. Yes, it is a 4 bolt with the heavy rods and square port heads. The intake manifold is also unique, because it is made for the Holley 3 barrel carb, and has a cutout in the secondary side so that the slab like throttle plate of the secondary can function.
