Ok. Have had a Mcbar brand y block to flathead 3 speed in the corner for 10 yrs . And now was the time to use it.So you can see by the pics we have a y block to flathead adapter bolted to a flathead to T5 adapter length and look good. The Mcbar adapter has never been used , threaded transmission holes but starter holes never threaded. I am very uncomfortable with the starter mount face , it should be flat but has machined lows and un tapped threads plus recessed portions. We are using a power master gear reduction startet . In the end I think we will look for another adaptet. Any leads much appreciated on a Y block to early flathead 3 speed adapter appreciated. Have surfed a little and come up empty.
Looks like the adapter has witness marks from a stock starter having been bolted to it (and probably run for a while). Probably had a bolt and nut on the bottom hole? They were low precision setups....
I don't think so but again anything is possible. good spotting though. The bottom hole appears more like poor casting with a burr on the side , and sitting in a recess where it should be flat all around, though its been sitting a long time it is still possible the recesses are in fact wear from a sloppy fit starter with 5/16 bolts where 3/8 threaded fittings are required to match the starter. As you said low precision ,so really i doubt this adapter will be up to the job.The transmission to adapter holes were threaded but the adapter to starter were unthreaded . I started one blank hole to tap till i realised the face was off. The face should be flat as i see it ,not with the high and low spots.
The recess shown is exactly how a stock Yblock bellhousing/convertor housing is made. A stock yblock starter fits into the recess and the ears of the starter fit flush against the outer part of the housing. Bolt holes are a little confusing. 5/16 bolts usually fit there.
yeah, 5/16" bolts on those 3 bolt Ford starters. If you can't see the witness marks...huh....they're very obvious to me, in your photo.
As usual squirrel your vast knowledge proves correct. I didnt check the threads on the old steel bellhousing which are infact 5/16. I just looked at the new power master starter and 3/8 fitted the holes perfect. I couldnt tell from my old starter as one ear was missing and the other holes ovaled , but in fairness it worked fine for us over 13yrs of driving and we had no issues in starting so didnt know we were close to failure.
