Hot Rods Damn,I hate it when someone says nice rat rod!

I don't know what's worse, Someone calling my 51 fleetline a rat rod or someone calling my OT HHR a PT cruiser.

 

If you're gonna have a Rat Rod that's the one to have.

Non car people are never going to get it. They think they're paying you a compliment.

 

My bud has a sweet '41 Ford sedan delivery...On a rainy day, some guy pulls up alongside (at a stop light) and says, "I KNOW that's a PT Cruiser, but what year is it???"
I said, "1941. It was a 'prototype'!"

 

Yeah, they really don't get it. I am so tired of the 'Nice Rat Rod' compliment I'm gonna go do a fresh coat of black prime! (my F100)

HRP I am going to guess that either of these folks were not very old. The younger folks today grew up seeing the car shows on TV that featured rat rods and quick crappy builds so to them anything that is in primer, or less than completed with chrome and fancy paint, is a rat rod. I think they just meant it as a compliment, problem is because of where we have been, or come from, we know the difference. Should have asked the young lady in the BMW if she wanted a ride!! Then you could have educated her!!

 

My glass '29 had faded grey & black gel-coat and needed paint which I couldn't afford. We had been driving it for 4 1/2 yrs but I got a "Best Unfinished" award for it!!! This was before R-R's , and it was basically finished!

 

Worst was I was talking on the phone last night to my ex-stepdaughter ( do you lose kids in a divorce??) and asked her if she had seen my '32 hot rod truck (in my avatar)....she said "oh yea, I had seen your R-R a few yrs ago !!! I had forgotten I had sent her a pic at the time, and her biker boyfriend probably called it a R-R due to his age and experience. I had to correct her and told her it was an old hot rod and not a R-R that was built from rusty shit and Home -Depot parts!

 

It's like, "Ignant" but less ethnic! LOL

I feel your pain , I get it all the time. I find myself getting more tolerant the older get, I still get pissed off, I just Don't Tell them to go ---- thierself anymore. Well most of the time. You just can't quit cold turkey.

 

I'm sure both these young individuals looked over at the neanderthal in the old car and they at the very least did make a effort.

The last time the car was painted was in 1963, the same year John F. Kennedy was assassinated so the paint is thin and scratched up,the fenders have been worked some and are mostly in black primer. HRP

People who see my truck will comment about my rat rod. I always tell them, it is a well patina'd, traditionally styled hot rod. They don't understand.

Also...people who like to look at cars, always ask me what color I'm going to paint it.

Car guys always ask, "you're not going to paint it, are you?"

 

general public have only a general idea as to what a old car is - do not know what rat rod means, and certainly would not know what a beater is - trying to educate everyone on the planet is a up hill battle - enjoy your day, and if bored try to learn what all of the abbreviations, symbols, etc used when texting, using facebook, etc. mean - Ha!

 

Hey at least they didn't call it a lowrider like they tell me.

I get it all the time and I just say "thank you", they took time out of their lives to mention how much they like what I was driving. some of you guys make it sound like they are going out of their way to insult you.

if some "cognoscenti" tried to correct me after I paid them a compliment I might think every guy driving a modified car/truck is some kind of elitist.

 

Isn't that what Traditional Hot Rodding is all about? spread the gospel of traditional Hot Rods and Kustoms to hoodlums worldwide… Elitist? I have been called much worse! HRP

 

I was at a recent cruise and a fellow I got to yapping with about the ole hotrod called it a nice streetrod even after explaining what period it is representative of and the story that fits its coming about and telling him very pleasantly its actually a Hotrod. He called his buddy over and introduced me and said Stogy here has the nice streetrod over there. Just a bit of info...he has a 30 Model A Tudor Streetrod himself. I am surprised he is 5 to 10 years (maybe more) my senior and doesn't know the difference. As Gary said give up they either get it or not and the latter is more common. I have had the other relation as well...The thumbs up or a cool car...is most common. I still will explain what it actually technically is if the conversation warrants it. On we go...

 

that might be what its about, but any newbie that has had three feet burned off his tail surface for his OT leanings might disagree with the "we arent elitists" talk. I cant imagine what a well meaning person on the street would feel about the same.
