Just bought a 40 Ford coupe. Hate to use the words "barn find" but it kind of fits. This car was hit in the front when parked and then stored in a garage in San Francisco for 25 years or more. I have always been a car guy but never owned one as old as this (45 GPW was my oldest). I have much reading and learning to do. Frank (Napa, CA)
Welcome!,.. ur coupe looks like a nice fixer upper project[emoji106] Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Hi & welcome. Looks like a real nice car. Appears solid except for the front fenders & grille. Those fenders can be straightened out with hammer & dollies if you like. Good news is any part you might need for the entire car is still avalible. I am a Chevy guy so I will not try to direct you to parts sources but if you ask on the Hokey Ass Message Board instead of the introduction forum many ford guys here will chime in with the sources. Nearly any 40 ford you find is always black so it is nice to find one original in other colors. Likely a good buffing and wax will make it shine like new. I have a good friend that recently found a 42 Ford 2 door sedan in that same color & it really looks great after buffing out. It is 100% original. When we go to cruise in's & such we try to park together and the 2 fat fender cars side by side in almost same color really draws lots of attention. When you get started on it post photo's & keep us updated as we love build photo's. Jimmie
WOW, Hard to believe they're still out there like this. Yeah, looks like a great start to a really cool '40. Good luck and welcome. Enjoy your HAMBtime........................................Don.
I was pretty amazed by it. A friend of mine passed away a few years ago. His son inherited this from an uncle who was going to leave it to my friend, so the kid was next in line. I let the kid store it at my place for about a year. He never took a liking to it. I paid real money for it but I couldn't help myself after looking at it all that time. Found a Silver Certificate dollar bill and a silver liberty dime in it when I was unpacking all the stuff that was stored in it. I am forbidden to work on it until I finish some house projects I have been putting off. The wheels on it are off one of my jeeps. It came with four very flat stockers on it.
Fantastic find!! There are lots of '40 Ford guys on HAMB and you will get all the help you want from them. Also recommend FORDBARN.COM for restoration type help. I spend a bit of time in your area (at the shipyard in Vallejo).....Napa is a great area to live.
Digging up my old thread since I am now not able to start conversations due to my lack of posts... This is what the coupe looked like before leaving the garage where it had been parked for 25 years...
I chose to have the fender hammered out but not finished for now. The goal was to get it repair what needs to be repaired to make it drivable without worrying about cosmetics. So, the fenders just needed to be able to fit and to have the parts that bolt to them fit.
