swapmeets?

Ok, done the intro thing. Now I got a question.

We were looking at one of a friends 40 Ford coupes and got to talking about finding parts. One thing led to another and the question of when did swapmeets start and where did they originate came up. Nobody had an answer so I thought I would ask here to see what kind of answers I get.

i know they were going strong at least 40 years ago.
i also remember riding to the very FIRST Iola swap meet when i was tiny in the rumble seat of a 34 ford 5 window coupe powered by a 327 chevy with a 4 speed, if you drove an old car they gave you a free lunch.
