Which torque converter

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fast Eddie, Apr 20, 2006.

  1. Ok, I have a bucket with a 2.79 rear end, and a built chevy 350 with a lift .48 /.490 and Duration at .050" 230/236 cam 10.5 to 1 compression and 600 cfm carb. I got a torque converter with the th350 i baught off a guy, but he didnt remember what the stall was. It takes a bit of rpm to get it moving. I dont think i have a good match for the car. What converter should i have.
Ive heard i need to be careful with such a light car so it doesnt push too much at stop lights

probably need 2500-3000 stall, but this will probably still be slipping when you're cruising down the highway....so also install some 3.73 gears.

    and hold on!

  4. im not to worried about the gears, it should help keep the rpm low on the freeway, but the amout of gas i need to give to get it moving, i would like to change, i dont know too much about torque converters, so i dont know if i need more or less stall

probably a good 10" convertor ...possibly a 11" from a good name brand company .....chances are that you probably never have it on the expressway cruising at 75 mph .....go a little loose ....and use a good cooler....and have fun .......brandon

The thing is, with that cam you need a converter that slips, so you have to give it gas to get going. If you want to run a converter that hooks up at lower rpm, then you really ought to put in a smaller cam...

Yeah...but you won't get into the 'powerband' of the engine 'till about 80mph. HaHaHa
I had 2.76 in a BB pickup. It was a dog until it got going good. But then again, it probably weighs more than your ride.:D

I just changed my torque converter out three weeks ago. I used a 2400 B&M stall and it works so much better than a stock one. I am running a 283chevy with a 268 comp cam and a 3.08 rear gear in a 26 T.(see pic to the left) The stock one did push a lot at stop lights. I dont have to stand on the brakes to hold at stop lights anymore

I have a 9" convertor in my coupe with a 355 Chevy, T400 trans and a 3.55 gear out back with 30" tall rear tires. I have drove it this way for 7 years....YES, it's a little to loose, but it's a rocket from a stop.

I always tell people to go with the least stall you can get away with. With 2.79 gears you will be flying by the time your convertor starts working effiently. I would say probably no more than a 2000-2200 stall. I had a T-bucket with a 351W/C4 combo. I ran a stock convertor with 3.89 gears and 33" tall tires and it ran really quick.
