    I, I say 'I', Marco installed a T5 in my 40, there's some info on my build thread, if the pisc are still there, or I can email you some if you want. Basically a split kit and modified the stock bottom x member. Its behind a 348, so a pretty big motor physically, seems to just about fit tho.

    So, how did you get the back end and those wheels that low? I'm looking at 8 inch small window Halibrands a little further down the line, so would be very interested on axle width info. I'm running an A rear spring and will be dropping in a QC center on 40 bells, that will need a 'light tickling' to get it all in there. Car looks the 'nuts', love the front crossmember mod, is that a dropped spring and axle, or stock spring and dropped axle?

    Neil, the rear end is a 9 inch ford that measures 52.5" wheel surface to wheel surface. If you use a 1-800 leaf spring kit, you will have to move the leafs inboard to keep the backing plates from smashing into your u-bolt perches. With an A spring, you should be good. Also, I used an 8 inch wheel that has the front space of a 10 inch wheel, so your measurements might also be different. The best way to do it is get the wheels and tires you want, put them exactly where they go, then measure wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface. That will be the total width of your rear end including brake drums.

    Here is a quickie Saturday update:

    This car has leaf springs, lowering blocks, a big motor and a 5 speed. All that is a recipe for wheel hopping disaster. To keep that from happening, I made a ghetto torque arm. The leaf springs still hold the car up and locate the rear end, al this arm does is keep the leaf spring from wrapping or oscillating on a hard launch.

    Just square thickwall tube and a 3/4 rod end.

    This is why it works without binding the whole rear suspension. The arm is mounted to a shackle that allows the arm to effectively lengthen and shorten during the range of motion of the leaf springs. Kind of like the slip yoke on a driveshaft. Ghetto, but it works.

    Smart set-up. I'm building my A roadster on 32 rails with 1/4 elliptics and plan on making a single torque arm using all or part of some 46-48 front bones.

    Bell housing is indicated, block and crank are off to the machine shop.

    I'm looking to build a '40 coupe along these lines. I might have missed it, but what did you do to bolt the front spring to the crossmember with it channeled down in there that far?

    I haven't done anything interesting at all. Lots of grunt work. I did get the last patch panel on the thing.

    Eberhama: The raised cross member is something I do to all my cars with transverse leaf, but on the deluxe front end, it got the car a little too low, so it was pretty much wasted effort. The spring is held into the channel by a plate and block that bolts to the bottom of the cross member using the original U bolt holes.

    I see...wondering if I can get away with reverse eye spring, cross member mod, and a fairly short tire, and skip the dropped axle to get me about where your at?

    I know it is blaspheme, but I never liked stock '40 dashes. I'm a bit of a minimalist and there is just too much crap on them for my taste. So, I welded up a bunch of stuff.
