rebuilding after the crash

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by racer-x, Sep 19, 2015.

  1. roo is correct. Melts lexan real fast. race cars being race cars there are always things being cut off or welded on. It would look bad in a hurry. Paint is also flameable. clear spray paint won't stick long without primer. all spray paint is removed with brake cleaner and we use a lot of that.

  3. Tried to make a pass. Engine is locked up tight. Blew the burst panel on the burnout. My guess is a bolt came out of the gear drive or pump drive spud. The bolt is most likely between the gears. I wont fix it at the track. i don't think we spun a bearing the car was not running long enough.

  7. I will find out what is going on this week. It sucks to waste the good weather. A weekend like this is getting rare as we get 20170912_063437.jpg late in the year.

  8. 20171008_174932.jpg 20171008_174941.jpg After i calmed down a bit i tore into the engine. The picture is alot clearer now. I removed the pump extension and found the drive was able to turn freely. Thats not good. That spins the dual drive. It went lean on the burnout popping the burst panel and breaking the belt. The spud was still connected to the spacer. Its the spacer that bolts to the cam that came loose. To get at it i need to pull the front cover. I know it wasnt a lean tune up because i had just set the leak prior to attempting a pass. We will see how all this goes i wont make bowling green but i might be able to get one more try at the ellusive seven second time slip.

  10. the hardest part will be supporting the engine while removing the front mounts. they need to come off first before i can get the cover off. after the covers off i can get a better look to see if the gear has any damage. i will know more tomorrow. its not snowing around here yet. as a kid i remember trick or treating in the snow. I'm starting to run out of time. we will stay focussed and see what happens.

  12. How late do they stay open. The grove stays open as long as its not snowing and sticking. I do remember making passes while there were some light flurries one sunday.

I used to run my 63 Belair 409 "Faded Memories" against the "Homewrecker" owned by Bob and Dan Hradisky. The "Homewrecker" was sold new at Hoskins Chevrolet of Elk Grove, IL to an old friend of mine, Joe Scarlotta. It was originally powered by a 327 with four speed. Joe won many, many races with the car, as it came from the factory. He is the one that named it. And yes, he has been divorced a few times. And he is still racing!

The bolt holding it on was loose. I will never know what part was the first to go. Im using alot of parts in ways they were never intended to be used. Sometimes we need to make our own parts to fit our unique needs. To cure this we spent several hours on the lathe and rotary table making a new one out of high strength steel. It was made with over twice the thickness were the center bolt goes through. It was also made to trap the center bolt exactly were it cant back out. We added a register to the backside were it attatches to the cam hub. When we decided to add this register bob at hot heads was able to give us the dimention we needed. The car was not close by to get it ourselves. This piece has received several upgrades. We think this 20171013_095514.jpg 20171013_123825.jpg 20171013_141902.jpg 20171013_164922.jpg 20171013_164946.jpg is the last time we will have this problem. 20171013_095514.jpg 20171013_123825.jpg 20171013_141902.jpg 20171013_164922.jpg 20171013_164946.jpg

  23. You sometimes cant always explain things. I think the car was telling me not to run it any more so it disconnected the drive for me. As i was scraping the timing cover surface i found this big crack in the block. Who knows what would have happened if i would have gotten the car down track at speed. The crack goes all the way up number one at the front of the block. Wow. I guess i have to wait until next spring for a seven second pass. 20171013_211855.jpg

Wow... Somebody's looking out for you - & I'm glad.
Guess the "opportunity to upgrade" came earlier than expected. At least you didn't get to wear the contents of the mill n fuel tank. That'd be just a little too exciting...
Thanks for the reply on the Q's before.
Hope the new build goes well. I'm going to guess the 'stupid horsepower level' is awaiting the new build... :D .
Does this one get built to withstand the Green Flames concoction? :D .
    Marcus...

That pic before the closeup (post 2371) you can see it quite clearly. @racer-x you are conditioned for setbacks. The sport is hard on components and you have a good eye. I wonder how long that was there it almost looks rusty. Well we are with you ups and downs and all and you are okay and Thats Number One...;)
