Hi fellas I have a 2 season old PowerGen Alternator for a 59A flathead Ford and the rear bearing is starting to 'knock'. The Powergen is still in use and on the car for as long s the weather stays nice, but I once the offseason sets in I want to replace both front and rear bearings with a high quality bearing. Does anyone have aftermarket high quality bearing #s for this Powergen ?
Take them out - go to a bearing supply house & tell them you'd like some American made replacements ... good luck.
As 302 GMC recommends: The professional bearing guys KNOW their business. I've been 'into' sealed, roller, ball, and flange bearings for years... One trip to the 'Bearing House' here made me humble. The counter man showed me a quick glossary in his catalog...from then on, I've entered the front door with confidence. And all the right questions!
Yep warrenty expired though I'll drive the car a bit longer then taker her apart and go to Bearing Service to get some good bearings!
I think I would be replacing the bearings now rather than later. Ten minutes to take it off, ten minutes or less to take it apart at least far enough to read the bearing numbers and a trip to town and back.
Curious question......are you running a fan on the crank pulley on your setup? I know the pic shows a plain pulley but I wondered if you’d replaced the pulley with the type that holds a fan.
Replace the bearings now or have it lock up and burn the belt and get towed home and then replace the bearings. Take it off on Monday night, go to a bearing supplier on Tuesday ,install the new bearings and be ready for the weekend.
Been running one for four years. Guess I’ve been lucky. I wouldn’t wait either. Doesn’t take much work to replace. Be sure you have the correct belt torque.
many moons ago, i went through an overdrive trans for my shoebox. took all the needle and roller bearings to a bearing store and they got me everything. cheaper that way, too!
Here in the shop I use Motion Industries for all types of bearings, if you can see it and measure it they can get one. Try their web site, that bearing more than likely has identification markings. Good luck.
Ok got the unit torn down - getting replacement bearings tomorrow. On belt tightness I use 1/2" flex -so as not to put too much pressure on waterpump bearings. Powergen states 1/4" flex but I don't wanna wear water pump bearings :/ What belt flex are you guys using ??
My flex is probably closer to 1”. The new style water pump bearings are more forgivable. Please take some pictures of your bearing and power gen re-***embly? For us who are not looking forward to this problem.
