Ok I have a 55 buick special with a 264 nailhead and a dynaflow. I just had the tranny rebuilt, but they said I might want to start looking for a new torque ball that goes between the tailshaft and the driveshaft because they wear and leak. Does anyone know of any possible upgrade or anything? I was told that some caddies and some olds ran dynaflows when the company was on strike back in the day. I heard that they ran a different tailshaft and more modern drive shaft. Can anyone help me???

yes, the Olds version had a conventional U joint/driveshaft araingement.

a guy should be able to swap out the tailshafts...

Some Olds and Caddies got the Dynaflow in 1953 when the Hydramatic factory burned down.

Are you sure the engine is a 264? I think the 264 in 1955 was only used with the std transmission.

As for the torque tube, to replace that with an open driveshaft would involve a complete re-do of the rear suspension. The rear sits on the coil springs and the torque tube keeps it in place fore and aft. You'd have to go to leaf springs or some sort of system similar to early 50's Olds or '58-'64 Chevys that used open driveshaft with coils.

And finding a Caddy or Olds with a Dynaflow is gonna be rare

I'd have the pilot bushing machined so you could use a 64-66 st-sp400 3 speed. Night and day difference performance-wise.

    I hate dynaflows. SLLLLUUUUSSSSSHHH!!!

    tell us more,
what is this st-sp400 3 speed you speak of?
    what did it come in?
    how does it perform?
and would it work in my Olds here?

I had the same problem on my 55 buick, also a 264/dynaslush, but mine leaked like crazy (yours is on its way, they all eventually start leaking bad). CARS www.oldbuickparts.com sells the kit to remedy the problem. Mine was replaced with their kit a year ago, and there have been no issues. I think its around $60-75.
