Hey all, this will be my first traditional old Ford build,I've had experience with lots of 50's Chevy's but flatheads and I beams are new to me. Trying to come with a basic game plan and see where it takes me. Basic run down of the rig is ; 33 pickup full fenders,49-53 flathead(loosely installed) truck 4 speed(would like something different) 65 Mustang rear end with parallel leafs, once again loosely installed. I'm slowly gathering parts but would like to start with some basics: boxing the frame and sorting front suspension. First question, does this front crossmember appear to be stock? And can I cut/modify old motor mounts to provide cleaner look and more clearance without any adverse effects?
Crossmember looks original to me. doubt you need to box the frame, especially if you are keeping the flathead, thats what came in them and the 33-34 frame is stronger than the 32 because it has an X member in it. You can cut the square corners off of those frame motor mounts to make them look cleaner. If you are referencing the old 1933 motor mounts on the crossmember, most people remove them with no ill effects as long as you have it welded in good.
Thanks! I plan on keeping this truck for quite some time and eventually would like a bigger motor so I'm boxing just so it's ready.
there was a great thread on here where a chap pulled the inner frame section and used it to box the other side, it was a neat trick and looked factory
It turns over and runs! Guy that i bought it from had a little gas can and basic wiring set up, new water pumps or rebuild kits are on the list as well as flushing the motor out. Any special tricks for doing so?
Use straight vinegar and run it in the engine after you get it reinstalled. I would advise using the new style bearing pumps instead of a rebuild. Good luck On your build.
Could use some help identifying this wheel. Its 15x7 4 1/2 bolt pattern. With the valve stem on the rear/inward side. Also, i love the color ,anybody know the name or what it came on?
If you returned that 33 front cross member to stock and removed this horrible welded in engine mounts you can mount the later flathead using the stock mounts. It looks a lot cleaner and transmits the weight directly onto the front spring. Sent from my SM-G935F using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I like this idea but what about that belt situation? Would all the pulleys have to be extended or is there enough meat on the motor mount to cut clearance ? Current position was only mock up by previous owner just to get the truck sold, you should see some of the other welds! Thanks for the input!
looks like an early '80s f100, some had car bolt pattern and are rugged wheels [4 hubcap nubs]. 1950s - 15" x 4.5 BP. only had 3 H C nubs.
