The company I work for is sending me to Novi Mi. for the moldmaking expo. I will be there Monday afternoon and will be leaving early Thursday morning. I will be staying at the Hotel Baronette. Is there anyting to do or see around Novi?
    Thanks,
    Steve Horsley

Hmm, what to do around here...well-

A larger "hall" facility was built close to the original Motorsports Hall of Fame site...for "Expos" like the Home Expo Show, or the Boat Expo Show. I ***umed that the MHF would move there as well, apparently not, according to their website. Guess there will be another giant abandonded building in the metro area. It wasn't that great anyway...but I'm not much into "motorsports".

Other than that, NO.VI was once considered "the boonies"...although it's been building up alot over the past 15 years; there isn't much to do there, except drink in bars; shop at 12 Oaks mall.

Novi got it's name as being...nahh, I won't spill the beans yet...but after you hear it, it's obvious...

    1) Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn is definately something to see. I find it odd that they have begun calling it "The Henry Ford"...sounds weird to me. The Village might not be open yet, but the Museum is open year round. Go here: http://www.hfmgv.org/
You may be able to take in the Ford Rouge Plant tour, which I've heard was surprisingly pretty good. I think you start off at the Museum and take a bus ride. The Ford Rouge Plant has been around since the 20's.

    2) Second City (the comedy troup) moved from Detroit to Novi this year. I saw the shows in Detroit, they were a riot. The venue on the other hand...
I only hope there is more room now. I'm 5'11, and I was cramped in their old seats. Go here: http://www.secondcity.com/?id=theatres/detroit

    3) If you're into African American culture, there is the Museum of African American History: http://www.maah-detroit.org/

    4) There is also the Detroit Science Center, which can be cool: http://www.detroitsciencecenter.org/

    5) And, in my hometown of Royal Oak, there is the much disputed Detroit Zoo. Funny, the zoo is actually in Royal Oak, yet all hell was raised when the Detroit City Government announced they couldn't fund it anymore. It's really a cool thing: http://www.detroitzoo.org/

    6) If you're looking for stuff on the weekend, there is always the Royal Oak Farmer's Market. Saturday is Produce, Sunday is Antiques:
    http://www.ci.royal-oak.mi.us/farmersmkt/index.html

Also- in Detroit, on the weekends, there is Eastern Market- good deals to be had there too. http://www.easternmarket.org/

If you're REALLY bored, you could always stop by and see the Lincury project. I'm home after 5:30 most nights. PM me. I'll buy you a beer from the fridge. I'm not too far from the Zoo, mentiond above. Sometimes I feel like I should live there.

    Hope this helps.

Go to the WALTER P. CHRYSLER MUSEUM. in Auburn hills (I-75 and M-59). They are having a HOTROD and COOL MODS show there till August. Just a short drive from Novi.

Thanks for all of the replys, GREAT info! It looks like I am not going to have to sit around the hotel with pleanty to do. I went to Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum as a kid, and have wanted to go back evar since. The Science Center sounds very cool as well as the Walter P Chrysler museum.
    Thanks again,
    Steve

I had never heard of the connections to the NOVI name contained in that article, about stagecoaches and whatnot... although the explanation that circulates locally is similar. Novi was said to have been the Number 6 area on a map of Michigan of some sort. The explanation at the time of the story I got was that it didn't have a name, so they went for "Novi", as in NO. VI, or "Number 6". Thanks for posting the link to the explanation, now we'll never really know! :)
