Thanks for this one. Looks like a dream I had once. The sedan in front of the tree gave me a reason to dork out on a tri 5. Colonial Cream / Onyx Black was only one of two possible 2 tone combos that year with the darker color on the roof. India Ivory / Onyx Black was the other.

Hello,

Up to 90% of So Cal folks have been to Disneyland. When it opened in July of 1955, there were tons of people there to witness the first huge amusement park on the West Coast. (almost 20 miles inland from the ocean) We did not go there until all of the hoopla had died down. Three weeks later, my dad took our family there. Disneyland has come a long way since then.

The original admission price was $1 for adults, 75 cents for juniors and 50 cents for children; individual ride tickets were 10 to 35 cents.

One of the attractions was a model airplane and tethered circular gas powered vehicles behind a chain link fence in Tomorrowland. You just sat and watched… Back then, it was interesting after seeing them at our elementary school playground in 53-54.

By 1959 the monorail was installed. The first of its kind anywhere in the world. It was one of the first “E” ticket rides. By 1961, the Disneyland Hotel stop was made. So, the monorail expanded to include an outside of the park stop at the hotel.

There were other “E” ticket rides, but this was the big attraction for many years.

One of my good friends from HS worked there in the swing shift, the 11pm to 7am group. It was their responsibility to take those Autopia cars out on the track and run them for accuracy and timing. Of course, it was pandemonium when the supervisor was on a break... one hand driving, one hand adjusting the motor, looking out for fellow workers sneaking up behind you for a "tap."

He was lucky, there were only a handful of maintenance workers all over the park, getting things ready for the next day's activities. He said that those cars could go so much faster, but for the public's sake, they had been modified to limit the speed, until the 12 midnight...races.

So, he never wanted to go to the park with friends, because it was too crowded for him. He liked the emptiness at night after the park closed.

The 19 gudzwieller car that broke a spindle at Terra Haute and killed Stan Bowman, 1962.

The 57 is the former HOW 21, Pfrommer Trucking 21/3 in Kenn Brenn livery.

 

Bowman somehow went over the wall while lining up for the third heat race. The green flag hadn't even been dropped yet. As paranoid as USAC was about magnaflux and crack checking of parts it had to be something of a freak accident that a spindle broke. Back then any time a car made even minor contact with something you had to get new mag papers from a registered USAC inspection station before they would let you run again.

 

It was the former Bob Sweikert car. Now owned by Stan Lobitz.

I thought they were recently sold at a Barret-Jackson Auction just a few yrs ago I believe as a pair...

Which Bob ? and Fred or Wayne? which pair were sold?
