I have a 40' project with a portion of a Hood Gas Strut Kit namely the two ball ends that connect the gas strut. What I don't have is the length of the struts when fully open. This kit was once made by Don's Rod Shop years ago. Can anyone out there give me the length of these struts so I know which ones to buy?
Cant you measure the distance between the 2 ends you have to determine the "closed" length? Then match that up to a strut. The amount the hood is open when the strut is fully extended isn't that important as long as its (the hood) open enough to get in there to work on it is it?
I removed both set of struts that were on my '40 coupe (hood & trunk) replace the trunk with New Drakes stock stuff. I am in the process of adding the Hydes Products (Slidell, LA 70459-1532 "The Hood Holder" on my new louvered hood. I had the Hydes Hood Holder on my '41 Pickup and loved it, no stress on the hood just have to use your muscle to lift the hood, the hood holder does not open as far as the stock arms but is adequate for oil checks etc.
I have struts on both my hood and deck lid. I bought the deck lid setup from Don's and the hood lifts from Mr 40s. Both use the same struts. One vendor has a "4776" part number and the other is made by Lavanture Products, P/N LGP8-244-85. I have my deck lid installed where the strut is 20 inches compressed and 23-1/2 extended. The strut is 24-3/8 extended when sitting on the table.
