Hey everyone, picked up a flathead/transmission, out of a 53 Merc pickup. What exactly is this transmission? I'm guessing T87 but not sure. Has a PTO shaft. Off a Canadian Merc truck if that makes a difference.
First year for synchros on 2-3-4th gear. Great improvement over the crash box. Used in dozens of Ford farm trucks I worked on in the '60s - '70s. Lots of clutches, u-joints, brakes, never a trans OH that I can remember.
s****e the left side of it and see if you can find the number. Truck transmission, extra low ratio first gear, synchro in 2,3,4th gears. And it has a parking brake. What do you want to do with it? It's a truck transmission, not a hot rod transmission.
They are a great trans......for a truck. Pretty much indestructible. As said, not really a performance item.
I had one of those bellhousings, or I think I still do, all I really remember is that they are 1" deeper than the car version, won't work for a top loader 4 speed conversion.
You are correct......the vintage truck guys like them as an easy way to put a synchro truck trans behind a flathead in a '42-'52 Ford big truck.
The transmission was connected to a flathead I bought. I was just curious if it was a decent transmission, and worthwhile keeping around.
