Vintage shots from days gone by!

Man, do I love this picture. I've always been a train guy.

 

The camp ground and a 63 pontiac brought back a memory from my youth. My uncle had a 63 Catalina and was pulling his camper back from a trip when the timing chain jumped. We stoped at a gas station and he played with the timing enought so we limped it home. It didn't stop him from being a Pontiac guy, he is 91 now and still pissed that they don't make Pontiacs any more.

 

The slice of life pictures are my favorite. Makes me wonder who those people were......and it's cool to see how it really was back then.

Hello,

The Getty Images shot of the Durfee Automotive roadster got me on a search through my files. I remember this roadster at Bakersfield 1960. The blown Olds powered roadster by Cirino, Groves and Durfee made a lot of noise every time it ran. As far as images are concerned, is hard to compete with the photos from the Getty Images photographers’ page. Those big negatives are hard to beat. This is a movie clip that looks like a still photo.

The Durfee Altered Roadster had the wildest set of induction tubes and headers, in 1960. At the Winternationals, the new set up for 1961-62 was the standard Hilborn 4 Port Scoop. It lost a little luster without those wild tubes, but it was still a fabulous Altered Roadster. Again, for any aspiring photographer with a common fixed lens camera back in those days, it was hard to compete using those small cameras vs the Peterson Publication “ high power” photographers.

“Petersen photographer Al Paloczy perfectly timed his shutter’s release and speed. The unusually wide, undistorted image area and deep focus were enabled by a rare 6×9-format camera." (Explains TEN archivist Thomas Voehringer: “Format numbers are rough estimations of image area, in centimeters. A 6×9 uses the same 120-sized film as a standard, square-format camera, but more per frame: You get eight 6×9 negatives per roll, maximum, as opposed to 12. The wider-angle format offers 120 quality with a larger image area that was especially good for horizontal or vertical subject matter.”

Here is an excerpt from Hot Rod News in 1961:

Willie Borsch and this happy guy, Don Reynolds, were still taking turns in the family T that evolved into the Winged Express. Don’s 10.55 at 139.31 held off the blown-Olds-powered Groves, Cirino & Durfee Model A in a trophy dash that must’ve been wonderfully noisy.

Hey BC,

Sorry, I know it isn't the same, but, I could not pass up your post wording, "Me, Too... best ever." It stood out instantly in my memory banks, when I was researching information for another post.

No disrespect for Fats Domino, as we all grew up listening and watching him perform when we were little kids, 1955-57. Every chance possible, when we found a piano at dances, church, or at the neighbor's house, we all tried to play the tunes on the keys. (not very well at first.)

My first, so called, "date" was with a girl who taught me to play some "boogie woogie" tunes. She had been taking piano lessons for years and could listen/play almost any song back then.

I loved that old rock and roll music, but, “I Found My Thrill…” in hot rods and drag racing…not a performer on the piano. Should have stuck with both all of these past years!
