Hey guys, I'm new here and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I'm in the process of restoring my dad's old tool box. He thinks it is a proto and that he bought it in 58-59 but can't remember for sure. I'd really like to get a positive ID on this thing if I can. Then find an emblem for it (***uming it had one when new). Any of your thoughts are appreciated. Does anyone know which emblem Proto was using in 1958? I have looked all over the box for any kind of date stamp or other markings but can't find anything.
Post your question to the Garage Journal. It's a sister-site to the HAMB, focused on tools: https://www.garagejournal.com That's a cool looking old toolbox, by the way.
The flying lady emblem was prevalent then. Is the riveted tag painted over ? Usually there was a riveted tag on Proto boxes, but I can't tell if the one visible on your first photo is it, or not. I ***umed it would be on the outside top. They eventually used those metal adhesive decals, but if 1950's era, I'd still look for rivets. And yes, Garage Journal. Like Clark said. This site, it's supreme leader, and all us garage storm troopers, geek out on stuff like this. Fortunately, the site split keeps it over there, and predominantly car stuff here, barring the occasional what should I paint my underwear threads .....
Yeah, the tag on there is dad's name tag he put on there years ago. Of course, he doesn't remember if he removed an emblem or not.
It does look like my fathers Craftsman tool box from the mid-late 50's. If I recall it had an odd shaped Craftsman emblem riveted on the front, where yours has the rectangle.
I have one that is the top box on a larger bottom, that has the exact lift handles. It is a Waterloo. The drawer slides are a little different as well as the front handles.
