Hi folks, my uncle just picked up this Model A, and he sent me this pic of the block stamping. It doesn't have any 'A' like I would expect though... anyone have thoughts on that?

    Thanks!

I'll see if he can. I know the engine is the best spot to ID an A, but is there another spot to look?

Right above the seam on the firewall, driver's side, there is a date stamped. That's as close to a production date as you will find. The engine might have been changed over time.

On the subrail crossbar, right in the middle in front of the seat, you will find a number and some letters stamped there. That will tell you what number coupe that car was produced at that factory.

Does the car have a steel back on the top, or is it fabric covered?

I'll have to ask. I haven't seen it in person. The premise is it's a '29, and if I run just the number, that checks out, but missing the "A" has me wondering. I'll have him check the other locations and see what they tell us. Thanks Alchemy!

Clean it real good, put a piece of thin paper over the numbers and rub a pencil over the paper.Should bring up the numbers.

I think that if it is an August of 29 coupe, it would be a steel back coupe.

    Oh huh, looks cherry

  13. Also try shining a light at an angle to the number. Also the number 4 looks like it has a foot on it. When you get it cleaned up a little better check out the numbers at the bottom of the page at this site: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_serialnumbers.htm

Note the numbers should correspond to the "old" numbers.

    Finally, where are the stars?

That's what I'm pondering the most. Where are the stars, and where's the "A?!"

    Thanks fellas.

  15. The format for the Model A VIN (actually the serial number because they weren't called VIN's at that time) is a 5 pointed star, a capital letter A and a number (which was between 1 and just under 5 million) followed by another star. I have included a picture to show this. Unfortunately the frame number in the picture had an "X" included, that was the reason I photographed it. Nobody has been able to tell me why the X was there so ignore it for your case.

The "X" could signify it was built in Canada.

  17. Canada had their own system of serial numbers and this doesn't fit into it. This response ***umes that you are just guessing and there is not some information out there that I haven't seen, is there?
