1950 chevy deluxe coupe

I just bought a beautiful 1950 chevy deluxe coupe from a guy in Indiana and had it transported to California, I'm really happy with everything on the car but I am having problems with the three on the tree. Sometimes it wont shift from 1st to 2nd and now it wont go into reverse. Does anybody have any suggestions ?.

 

I'd say pop the hood and have a look at the linkage.

 

Pretty common problem, at worst you will have to rebush the shift rods in/on column, sometimes adjustment of rods to trans helps.
On second thought at worst it could be is all the above and a trans rebuild!

 

There used to be an aftermarket kit that fixed that problem. I got one off of Ebay a couple of years ago.

 

All so, you need to J hook or Z hook while your shifting, three on the trees shift better that way, try and shift it like a four on the floor and it will jam!!

Sounds like bushings to me. As mentioned above, shift slowly no power shifts.

 

What about making sure the shift control box under the hood on the steering column has grease in it. Sometimes the gates are so worn you have to replace are build up and grind back down to size. May be a repop replacement?

I'd start under the hood in the linkage box checking internals are greased. If that's fine check on the actual trans, behind the shift lever plate are the forks. It's normal that the forks wear to the point of inability to properly shift. But first and foremost check all shift linkage bushings and trans mounts along with motor mounts. Don't forget after removing cotter pins replace with new ones.....evertime. Another thing to remember is before removing the lever plate pure trans in neutral and note where levers sit and where each of the linkage rods go, label them if need be otherwise you will definitely freak out when the Shifter won't move any direction. All good advice so far, but I'd start with the simplest/easiest first. New bushings and adjustment, then the shifter box. It sounds like the transmission operates fine, it's just getting it into the right gear at the right time. You could do what I did with mine and the nephews 51 Bus Coupe; swap in a Mild 350 with a beefed up automatic and a 56 Chevrolet rear end with Positraction and 4.88:1 gears (car was build as a Street G***er), because that's what you're going to want to do anyhway. After all, you have come to the HAMB, and that's what it's all about. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Go down to Western Auto and buy a Foxcraft shifter. That's what I did when my 51 column linkage messed up in 1967.
