Thanks for posting those pictures, cool doesn't even begin to explain that stuff. I have looked for years for some of MT's stuff all to no avail. The only thing I ever found was this ad.

Somehow missed this thread 3 years ago. Glad it surfaced again. Bet you have rounded up more of this extremely rare speed equipment since then. Our p***ions don't easily go away.

I believe the heads for that 283 were recalled due to porosity issues.... I could be wrong..

Never heard that before. Have you seen do***entation to back that up? I do have a SBC short aluminum pump and I believe it was produced for a military application. I bought it online and it came from a guy that had a lot of Mil. Spec. surplus stuff.

Great score ! My buddy Augie has owned at least two of those blocks plus a M/T Magnesium SBC. He has that same gift as you do for having exotic parts fall into his lap.He knows quite a bit about the history of these blocks . What I recall was GM cast some experimental aluminum blocks and heads way back in the '50's. Mickey somehow got the patterns from GM and poured a few of his own with M/T cast in. As the story goes he also cast a few in Magnesium for the off-road trucks.

You are correct................................................kinda. Mickey cast his MT aluminum 327 blocks for his run at the Indy 500 in 1967 (see Hot Rod Magazine, June 1967 issue). GM cast 31 magnesium blocks for Mickey for his 1963 Indy 500 effort. I have a GM do***ent to confirm this. The mag blocks were so porous and leaked oil and water so badly that Mickey asked USAC if he could change the mag blocks to the GM aluminum blocks and he was allowed to do so for obvious safety reasons. Photos below are the mag block. P2046472.JPG P3136248.JPG

That one is one of GM aluminum small blocks cast in March 1959 for research into lighter engines and components. The heads are the 1960 Corvette heads. These are the ones that GM had cast by a German foundry. They are OK. The US castings had problems with valve guides and were porous. This engine resides in the Detroit area.

This is one of 20 aluminum 327 engines Mickey cast for his run at Indy in 1967.

Don Ferguson has s couple of those sitting on a shelf in his shop. They are as cast condition. He also has what seems to be 1 gazillion Ardun engines in all configurations. A real hot rod candy store.

Used in the M-113 APCs for a short time. Tried to find where I posted the story but it was awhile ago and HAMB won't go back that far in a search of anyone's posts. If I remember right it was a story in maybe popular mechanics.

Something about not having bosses on the sides of the block for motor mounts...

I think Ferguson had the foundry and HE actually cast them FOR Mickey. Does anyone here know any history on these MT aluminum blocks? The one I have was in a Cheetah race car at one time.

The GM aluminum blocks were cast in 1959 and would have had bosses for side mounts.

There are two old APCs located by the practice garade range
There were 2 old APCs, gas driven SBC located on the grenade squad practice range on Ft. L. Wood, MO. I remember looking at the alum blocks and heads when some SOB, Drill SGT came by and started yelling about a war going on someplace and maybe I should join the group. They might still be there.

Will your belt drive arrangement be able to overcome the valve spring pressures?
