I have this kind of box on my 52 chebby P U.I need to put a swivel joint/damper on box. The small pin sticking out of splined section. 1st what is it, and can i cut part of it off to clear swivel.Cant see it in pic, but it is /does have a dowel pin in it.
I have no idea what you and doing but that is a vibration isolator, not a swivel and it will not last as a swivel. If you have a misalignment, you need a steering universal that is available from many hot rod supply companies. John
You sure you got to? Those boxes in OEM application had the rag joints. I'd say that the joints would handle up to 5° with no problem
Not sure what the pin on the gear box is, but it doesn't look like it is needed. Is it solid or does it slide into the gear box?
YES.......that is NOT a swivel joint. It is one half of an isolater and vibration dampener that mates to another flange on the bottom of a GM collapsible steering column shaft.
OK let me reword this. The box had a rag joint which was used as swivel. I DIDN'T DO IT, I BOUGHT IT( THE TRUCK) that way. But it did last 10 years that way.I noticed slack in steering went to put new rag joint on there then realized it was being used as the swivel. Too much angle between box and steering column.I am now putting a aftermarket swivel/knuckle/damper on box. Which is the right way to do it. BUT the pin, that sticks out will hit the inside of universal , causing a bind.I am not using the rag joint. I'm calling it a pin, cause i really don't know what it is.As stated the splined part has a dowel pin that appears to go through splines/pin. I think you may have to use a puller to get splines off to replace seals. Maybe i made it a little more clear. Sorry for confusion.
Thanks Jerry. I guess i need to be a little more clear with what i say. Tell Granddaughter i had Krystals This week .LOL course i have them every week. Sent you a private msg
The pin is the end of the torsion bar for the directional control valve and yes you can cut the end off Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I thought the pins could actually hit the metal on the opposite side? I'd always thought they were for safety if the joint went totally FUBAR so you'd still have some type of steering?
Nope not the pin sticking out, the rag joint has some redundancy built into it, there is a mechanical backup built into the gear so if that torsion bar breaks we still have steering but has nothing to do with the little bit sticking out Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
...cut the pin off, done than many times to do what you're doing,, use a hacksaw , not a cut-off wheel, you don't want to heat up the small seal just below the pin...
