so if you have a full custom that the vin plate is either gone or covered and you need to register a car is there a place to buy a reproduction vin plate and have your number stamped into it? 1951 shoebox ford thanks all!!
Vin number should be stamped on top of the left frame rail between the firewall and the front crossmember. Number will prolly start with a * and end with a * as well. Originally the number was also stamped on top of the rear crossmember but you can't very well see it with the body on the frame. Same number was usually stamped on the bellhousing during ***embly of the engine & ****** into the frame. Since it's a full custom the original motor may be long gone by now.
you probably all ready figured out that your frame or any part of the build has numbers on it right. There are some really good post on exactly how to get it registared legal in california. If I was in your shoes...I was...check out body tags and how bodies used to be id...in 1930. All you need is a legal set of numbers to get your project rolling. The tough part will be getting your numbers checked out by dmv or some other registration source. What ever you do....don't take it to CHP.
My car had no numbers at all on the frame and the VIN plate was missing. I had the original engine though so I knew the registration number. I saved a pic of a VIN plate someone was selling on ebay. Then I took the pic along with the info I wanted on my plate to the local trophy shop. They duplicated the plate with the right info and fonts for only 5$. 4 pop-rivets later my car is identified and legal.
