Didnt race as a kid but did a ton of dirt jumping and trail riding. Anyhow as of last year my son started to race ABA (10 nov) and I've been riding all the time with him and will start racing myself in June.... But until then I'm training with him for the SuperNationals coming up in less than 2 weeks...
Anyone looking for a really heavy-duty frame and fork? My friend has a Ketch (I think thats how you spell it) dirt jumper for sale.
great thread, I raced for a few years in the early 80's. I had a second generation Race Inc, and my bro had a PK Ripper, we were all about SE Racing and we pitched in and built a quadangle. I sold my race bike to buy a new skateboard deck in high school for like 60 bux or something stupid, I would love to get it back, I got my bros PK stolen from a girl friends front porch. I got a mongoos supergoose 24" back in 1994 and have been jumping on that since, I always say, if I am not jumping or bombing a hill, I have no business on a bike! I just scored a GT mini for my 7 yr old son and we are gonna start going to practice days at the track and if he wants to race, I will too. My bro just got a 24" haro last week, so we are getting back into it. I Raced at Ed Fountain Park in Las Vegas in 83-84, and In Vernal Utah in 81-83. Damn it was a while ago. Never got too good, just had a whole lot of fun. I remember the nationals when a diamond back pro who I cant remember right now gave me his 3rd place trophy ticket, he only kept 1st and 2nds, so I had this big ass trophy in my room, I had him sign it and I thought I was cool as hell.
i am FBM If your still in the "scene" you know what it means. i dont ride any more thought broke my hip and back in car wreck
I have had a lot of fun on bikes, never raced. I did spend alot of time racing motocross, though. The last couple of years life has gotton in the way of persuing my amatuer career. jeff
Funny....I have Woody's autograph somewhere. His and "The Bowz". They, however, pale in comparison to my autographed Radical Rick picture.
I havn't been on here for a while, someone told me there was a BMX thread on here, I started racing back in the early 80's, raced a ton till about '90, got one state champ, 2 runner ups, raced about 1-2 times a year till last year got back into it, broke my arm, and still going, went to an NBL regional this past weekend and main the main both days!! Race in the 35-39 cruiser class, race local with 2 gates of old has beens also. Volenteer at the local BMX track, my wife does the web site www.eastmolinebmx.com I race a 24" Standard with old school Patterson stickers on it for all you old school guys. I also love the vintagebmx web site. Yes I am still working on the McCormick/Westrgard '41 Cad, just about finished up, he is planning on having it at Salina, you should of heard the reaction at Salina KKOA show last year walking around and the Kustom guys asking what I did to break my arm, I tol them I fell of my BMX bike, they said what the hell is a BMX??? ThenI told them a bicycle, they looked at me like I was yanking their leg, so I had to start telling people I got broke in a UFC fight, and they liked that better, hehe You would not beleive how many old BMXers I run into in the hot rod world, and we always hit it off very well.
used to ride alot of steet. but moved over to modified trials, got real hurt dropping off a 10' wall...before that i used to ride match sprint on the velodrome, raced at the US track nat's, tried out for the US national team, rode with the olympic team a couple of times. i miss it sometimes, then i remember what dicks most of the guys were. got smart (and bigger) took up rugby.
bringing it back up. awsome thread. I raced hard in the 80's. I was number 73 in the states. raced a diamond back first then switched to mongoose. (small sponcer). then finshed off with a JMC and a hutch. Does anyone else remember the paper publications that were sent out every so often the had a listing of the names and ranks inside? ahhh those were the days. that was a few pounds ago and falling seems to hurt a little more now. I raced out of Dillsburgh, Woodward, SUN BMX (father owned part of) and a few that the names have past me buy. anyway great thread. I thought it was worth one more bump. remember the uni seat? redline 3 piece cranks and skyway II;s also the dreaded Lester wheels? thanks for the memories.
i forgot all about this thread right after i posted on it. brings back some good memorys. its crazy seeing these names of guys i used to want to become when i was younger. Then meeting some of them in my late teens and they were just as big of a dirt ball as i am. Seems most guys were. 90% of my old riding crew is all into cars now. seems to be natrual. I want to find a og s&m dirtbike that will all ways be my all time fav. any one know what happend to shawn butler? that guy had so much style he was the dirt king back when i was into it heavy.
Yeah I still ride occasionally. I have a newer bike built real well. Also have a good friend Danny Griffith that is pro.
I have rode a bmx bike for the better part of my life, Im 24 I had the training wheels off before I was 4. I raced seriously from age 9-16 at around 11 we started traveling to the surrounding states for nationals. I turned 16 and found cars. I still ride here and there not as much as I would like to though (Im a lazy ass). I have rode trails, street, tracks and now skate parks, its crazy to see how much skate parks have influenced things. In SLC no one wants to build trails anymore cause parks are so convenient. Most of the kids I grew up riding with have moved on to the upper levels of BMX. A fair chunk of them do it for a living. On the X-games, Dew tour, Triple Crown etc... They are far more taleted than I ever was though. I was fast and I could ride and hit trails but just not like quite like them, but thats why they are where they are. I am stoked to see my friends doing what they love for a living, a good one at that... I have had more bikes than I care to list. Current bike is an S&M Black Bike with mostly S&M parts. One of the coolest parts on it I think are the Prince Albert cranks... I think that BMX and modding cars goes hand in hand. As young kids we would try to swap out are parts for cooler ones, cut bars, seat posts, shorten chains to make them lighter etc. Most of the kids I grew up riding with are into cars or motorcycles now. I think that sparks the fire to make things cooler and better just like cars UT01/ 39th trails represent! hehe.
yup, same as skateing, all my life. i only have 2 bmx's left. one and Elf with all the goodies 6 piece bars and profile 3 piece. the other is an Elf Double Cross with pretty much all the same goodies but has old GT seal wheels. still try getting out as much as i can!
i was still racing ABA two years ago was NAG 5 in 41-45 used to race on factroy teams in 75-79 still have my bikes.
Wow Talk about the good old days! the year was 1978 The bike was a Laguna. I was 11, racing in the 11-12 year old class . I was way smaller than most of the kids. So I peddled like hell to stay away. Thats the 1978 State Champion tropy on my left.
my BMX days were in the 80s on 26" KOS "Mongoose" cruisers, now its just trail riding on the same KOS bikes, I just welded a tang to accept a derailleur and made it a 5 speed, stuck with KOS cruisers because they were the only bike I couldn't break..I still have two KOS bikes..I'm 6'2" 230 lbs and was always good at going downhill fast..cast yer fat to the wind....
I made BMX Plus one time in about 79 or 80, and of course I was mid air fixxin to do a lipskid. The caption said something like"lookout mama I dig carnations"
I used to ride back in the day with SUHRsc we had a dirt jump and some local skate parks, was alot of fun. Although I feel it now and I'm still young yet. Me-oh
I started racing in 1978 at the track in Manteno, Illinois...exactly 1 block west of Troy Trepaniers shop. My dad, brother, sister and myself raced all over the midwest, hit quite a few nationals and absolutely loved it. I still have the National Pro that I was on the the attached pic. I aquired the nickname Narly Charlie early on. I last raced in 1988....wish that I would have found out about girls later in life...they sure can screw things up for a guy. Although I never won a national event, I did win a few state qualifiers, double points races and finished 2nd at the Hutch Superbowl of BMX in Toledo, Ohio one year. I haven't been on my bike in a while, but have got some pressure from a friend (thanks Mr. Strange) to get back on and race again. Overall, I would have to say that my BMX days are some of my fondest memories. It sure beat the stick and ball sports for sure.Great thread. Oh, don't rag on me too hard for the "pie plate. This pic was taken at an indoor track in Rochelle, Illinois which was an NBL track, and we stopped after racing a national (ABA) in Rockford. Apparentl I didn't bring my ABA plate. I did win that day.
Yup. raced, freestyled, mtn. biked ,etc. Had GT's, Redline, Hutch, Haro's, SE Racing QuadAngle........anybody remember those? Settled into Cannondales on the trails. Wish I still had my old Trials bike. Gray and pink but fucking great bike.
Wow, I missed this one the first few times around... I started off racing in 82 on a Mongoose with those awfully heavy cast spiderweb mags.... I've still got my 85 Schwinn Sting. Man, I was so proud off that bike... I raced for a Schwinn dealer in Michigan in the late 90's until my age and injuries caught up with me... My last bike and the one I still fuck around on from time to time is a 98 Schwinn Pro Mod 1. I've put on a good 65 pounds since my old "race weight" and have gotten a lot slower... I'm hoping to go race the old man class this coming year.
I think Its likely we raced together, your picture looks very familiar too. I remember going to Manteno around then but I raced alot of ABA in St.Louis & NBL in Springfield and Collinsville IL. I rode a JMC then w/IL 7 ABA plate or 42R NBL plate and would have been in 15 or 16 expert around then. I loved the indoor stuff ,the Chicago Amphitheater was way cool and the Jag indoor championships at Indy.
I like fixed gear track and road bikes: but I'm always on the look for a vintage GT or something to knock around on.
