I really appreciate the main page posting about what "real" lowiders are - the influence of pachucos, zoot suits, sand bags, and L.A. barrio lowrider culture. Ryan, ya mentioned barris bros. and how latino creativity influenced the customization, but I want to also say there were two latino hermanos who became intergral to introducing barris to latino pachuco customization. --Sorry-I forget their name, think it started with "A". Now, what I hope to get from my post? Real vintage 40's, 50's lowider pix. NOT CANDY, PLASTIC STUFF. I'd like reference, inspiration pix such as: red rims, 2nd hand chebbys, hub caps, sand bag, skirts. Where could I see some authentic "barrio /pachuco" firme rides from the 40's & 50's? THANX.
It definitely reminded me of being a little kid going to the Lowrider shows in Espanola NM...and the Bajito Lowrider store in Albeqerque ...I got my first taste of low and slow there and have been into it ever since.. Gable
i'm interested too. i've only seen about 2 pictures of zoot suiters, the real deal, in my whole life. hard to find info on that stuff.
The AYALA Bros. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=49643 ORALE! I was born and raised around Bombs. My pops was lowrid'n in Echo Park in the 70's. I always love to hear his old stories. To this day if I mention shaving handles and chopping tops he goes into his Fred sanford heart attack routine. When it comes to hot rods, I'm pretty ****ing clueless but still appreciate em. But I'll always have a soft spot for true lowriders(not that stupid gold ****!!!!) I'll try and find pics of his old 60 impala on cragars. till then here's a pic of his crew.
Great story but... please explain El Paso as the birthplace of lowriders. Lowered cars have been part of the Los Angeles latino culture way before WW2. Before my dad p***ed away he would tell me stories of Chavez Ravine, wearing zoot suits, getting thrown into jail for fighting drunk sailors while the sailors walked, and cars. Lots of stories about cars. I must admit he did drive a lowrered '47 Ford after the war ended. That's why my mom fell for him. The birthplace will always be L.A. -stick P.S. I miss you "Speedy".
