Going to look at a 54 Customline 2 door sedan this weekend that has a six and automatic which will not stay in very long, plans are for a 302/AOD and use the original rear end for awhile and just add a dual master cylinder and use the drum brakes until I get the parts for power disc brakes. Since the frame is similar to my 55 will it take the same parts to drop that 302 in like I done to put the 351 in my 55.
This is what you are asking READ all of it: #1 https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/media/albums/289-302-351w-swap-mounts.41498/ #2 https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/self-adjusting-brakes-for-a-54.899224/ #3 https://www.performanceonline.com/1964-73-ford-mustang-front-high-performance-brake-shoes/ #4 https://www.performanceonline.com/1964-73-ford-mustang-rear-high-performance-brake-shoes/ #5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=14&v=wXfXKlj2D1I
If you are keeping the stock rear end get a 1982-86 Crown Vic drive shaft and this U-joint and it will be a bolt-in. http://www.drivetrainamerica.com/neapco-2-0291-2c-1310-conversion-u-joint/
On my 55 I bought a mount kit that put the motor right up against the firewall so I could not use the original throttle linkage so do those motor mounts keep the motor away from the firewall enough for throttle linkage . I presume the six linkage on the 54 is similar to the 55 six linkage parts I picked up but could not use.
I had the firewall issue with the 302 in my 56. I swapped the mounts from side to side. That gave me clearance but I needed to the transmission mount since I am using a tremec 5 speed. I do not know if it would be the same with any other ******. I used Anchor 85 Lincoln mounts 2725 & 2726. Had to slot the frame mounts. There is a post on this subject.
The mounts shown here: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/media/albums/289-302-351w-swap-mounts.41498/ They can be reversed side to side this will move the engine forward or back as you need it,however if the car had a y-block from the factory instead of the Six you will have less radiator clearance.
I used six cylinder radiator brackets for better fan clearance on the 55 and wish I would have known about those mounts but that was in the days before a computer, the motor was in with the mount kit before I modified the radiator or I would have moved the motor forward some.
When I had the radiator recored I had six cylinder brackets installed so I could gain more room for a decent fan,I also had to cut the splash pan too since the radiator is where it would be if it had a six.
Hey Jeff I was wondering if these mounts are good for 52-59? My buddy and I are swapping out our tired y-blocks for 302/C4 units this winter. He has a 54 and I have a 59. Your photos are very helpful. Thanks!
The mount part numbers are the same, what is not the same is the position of a C4's mount you may have to add a section of steel plate to extend it about 3" an AOD is a perfect fit to any 1952-59 transmission cross member, another plus is the AOD's .67 overdrive that will lower a 70 MPH cruise speed by about 800-900 RPM.
