OK, I'm hooked... yes Jan Wehr is alive and well, and still has Kustoms running through her veins. I have attached pics of the 50 Teal Merc and the 39 Merc which is still around. #fortheloveofkustoms

 

That's great to hear @Too Tall! She would definitely be fun to sit down and talk customs with. She and the late Mr. Wehr truly lived the custom lifestyle! E

You are correct.. and Cowboy still owns and drives this Merc.

 

I thought David's Merc was in a Tex Smith magazine. Maybe the four Kustom issues that were published in the late 80s early 90s. I'll look when I get home.

I was thumbing through the Customs today when I saw the car my friend Clarence built, I have been out of the car scene for a while and have not run across him. Mr"C" as I always called him is a great guy with a lot of knowledge about the car history around the Aurora area.

 

Owner was the late Larry Gould. Larry also owned 50 Merc "Alley Oop" built by Paul Mathes.

 

I agree 100%.

 

The Wehr's Zephyr is now located in Washington and winning a lot of awards. The new owners are very happy and LOVE the car.

 

Not to steal your thunder, Mick, but I went ahead and looked at the Tex Smith Custom Car Magazine series you mentioned and you were right. David Guyman's '55 Merc was in Tex Smith's Custom Car Magazine Volume 1 number 2 from November/December 1989 on pages 56 and 57. Love the construction photos as well as the picture of it in primer. Shame that magazine only lasted 4 issues. It showed a lot of promise and the four issues printed were pretty good.

Glad you're enjoying the thread Mick. It's a baby compared to your "Kustom Blues " thread. Lots of eye candy and history lessons on it. Nice the way the custom folks have gathered and posted a mountain of great custom and leadsled pics there. Fun stuff! E

I finally found my pics of Alley Oop in white primer and a shot of the engine compartment ....I stand corrected this was when it was actually painted white

I know Rick, he still has the Ultimus bubble top. Next time I see him I'll ask him about the 55' . I haven't seen it in a long time so I would assume it's still without a motor.

 

No. Completely different car. Here are some pic`s. I`ll do it in 2 posts incase the later version gets deleated. The first pic was taken in Des Moines Goodguys show.

 

The next pic`s were taken a few years back in Salina. Had to cover the wheels.

 

Here`s the last pic I have of the 55. You have to wonder where they come up with some of there ideas. Years later I saw this Merc in Custom Cars from Jan of 59. Since then, I have seen very few pictures of it.

 

Thanks stanlow69... I thought it was kind of a stretch but I was noticing the tail light bumps ... thought maybe...wow them last shots .. the look of it is getting pretty wild....that's what keeps things interesting...

The Last time I saw this Merc it took "Top Merc" at the Merc Deuce Reunion at Starbird's in 2007.

I saw the coverage in a magazine(Custom Rodder maybe) and wondered how many Merc`s were there. I wanted to see the car in person. I never saw the show advertised anywhere. So when I saw the car, I had to take pictures of it.

The four magazines that Tex Smith published is a must have in your Kustom library.

 

Speaking of inspiration for ideas used, here's another with similar styling. October 1960.

 

Man, that one is ugly.
The interior, that snow-plough front, the paint job. Poor Mercury, can't be much worse than that.

 

Mick has saved worse....it can be done.

 

There is a new caretaker for Doug Thompson "Scorpion" and he surprised all of us this year when he rolled into Custom Car Revival.

 

What ever happened to The Polynesian '56 Studebaker? Last known info I saw, was that it was in a boneyard rusting away. Anyone know if it was saved?
