I've used the search feature!!! I can't seem to find a wiring diagram I'm happy with that covers what I've got going on. 12v system Pertronix Ignitor II Accel 1.4 ohm coil GM Alternator Two post keyed switch* Push ****on starter* I wired it up using the diagram in the shop manual, but apparently my eyes are getting bad because those lines are super hard to read... especially covered in grime and age. I've got power to coil, but no spark. Before I double check all my wires I wanted to see what y'all had to say. I should also point out that I did this lastnight in the dark, with a dumb spelunker headband flashlight on- it's entirely possible I missed something and was just tired and pissed off when I gave up.
Black wire from distributor to - coil, orange wire to +coil ? Mine is a flamethrower small base hei, though the wiring should be the same. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Once you figure out how you wired it, let us know, and we'll see if we can help you figure out what's wrong. Right now, there is nothing to go on. At all.
Don't have an answer for no fire but I believe a Pertronix Ignitor II takes a .6 ohms coil http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/flame/coils/chart.aspx
Yeah I noticed that... seemed to be some confusion in some of the posts I read online about the ignitor I/II and 6v-12v systems. Just ordered the correct part and will be here in about an hour.
If it's wired like that, it should work, I think. I guess you need to double check. The coil resistance...kind of relates to whether or not you use a ballast resistor. If it's a coil that has a higher resistance and is not designed to use an external ballast resistor, then it should be fine.
Try it with the start ****on connected to the battery positive, instead of to ignition hot, and check that coil + (and pertronix module) stays hot while cranking.
Tried it with a modern ignition key switch and went through each wire again... still no spark. Ruled out wiring, coils, switches... pertronix unit is now suspect. I've never had so much trouble with ignition wiring before.
Does module have power w/ign on and while cranking? You can insert a straight pin into the wire insulation or connector to provide a place to connect test light or meter. If module does have power even during cranking (starting), but no spark, module may be bad. It should ground coil negative each time reluctor p***es window. Make sure distributor is grounding to block and to Bat -. I have chased points ignition problems and found points that were not grounding thru distributor. Ground for module has to come thru dist. body. Hope this helps. Good luck.
This is exactly the issue. Pin through + insulation, connected to test light- lights up with key on and pulsed slightly while cranking... no spark.
What is voltage while cranking? The Pertronix wants a full 12 volts while cranking to fire the engine. Phil
I think Pertronix may say that is marginal. I had Ptrix and would start when I let off the key, but not while cranking. Not enough voltage. Put in a GM hei, which is more forgiving, fired immediately. A couple years go by and started having the same problem with hei. Decided to start with a new battery. Found a splice in positive cable, made by a previous owner had deteriorated over the years. Strange things can cause a low voltage while cranking problem. I would start by looking at the ground circuit, from battery to engine to starter. Hope this helps. Phil
You wanna feed it full battery voltage because it's always going to sag some when the starter soaks up all that juice, even with a good battery. Make sure cables are good and ground connections are clean and tight. Spec is when a battery drops to 9.6 volts during cranking it's time for a new battery.
Battery grounded to block/block to frame in two separate places. Distributor case is also grounded to block. I've cleaned every piece of metal and every contact point for grounds and for batt +.
Remove the + wire from coil to Pertronix module and connect a jumper from Battery to that wire, then check for spark with key on and coil hot.
