Looking for a good carburator shop in SOCAL. (Whittier, East LA, EL Monte, Pasadena area) I need to rebuild a Holley for my 30. Is it just me or do all Holleys take a ****. I bought it brand new a year ago and it needs to be rebuilt already.

  6. Flacos on Gage in South Central... He is cheap and GOOD... I used to take my 62 Comet there... My Mama took her new car and her 67 Mustang there... and My brother takes his 69 Firebird there... He is really nice too... And sometimes he does not charge for an adjustment...

what's wrong with it? messin with holleys isn't rocket science, tear into it yourself. there's tons of sites on the net that walk you through tuning a holley. basic carb knowledge is a must so you're not one of those guys stuck in the middle of nowhere with a simple carb problem. if you're too scared to tinker with a holley, you might as well hand in your hot rodder credentials.

Perfect...thanks for lighting the fire ray. Ok...lets start with the basics....when I got the car back the floats were stuck open, fuel leeking, take the plugs out and crank it over. Car runs go for a cruz to the HAMB BBq, floats now unstuck. When I jump on the gas it bogs and then takes off, if I jump on it again the car back fires. Holley 650 electronic choke on a 327, running 3 and 1/2 lbs fuel pressure. Got a starting point for me ray?

well, okay, i'll help a little, but please od a quick google or yahoo search of holley carb tuning and you'll come up with literally dozens of hits that will walk you through in much more detail than i can, i'm not a very good writer. or hit your local book store and see if they have a book on holleys, i think the one i have is from HP books. lots of pictures and very explicit instructions.

first, as far as the initial flooding problem, pull the needle and seat out of each bowl, loosen the slotted screw on top a crack, then back them out using the 5/8 nut. visually inspect to nake sure there isn't anything in them, you can blow through them with some compressed air. reinstall and set the float level by removing the plugs on the side of the fuel bowl and adjust the needle and seat height by adjusting the slotted lock screw on top of the needle and seat until fuel just runs out of the sight plug. remove the bowls too and make sure they are clean inside. be sure you have a decent filter right before the carb, i've lsot trust in the sintered bronze filters that are stock, installed in the fuel line adaptor fitting at the carb, i've had **** manage to get past them somehow.

as for the bogyou are probably going lean just off idle, it's likely one of two things, the accelerator pump may be out of adjustment, check the arm that contacts the throttle linkage, you should see a squirt of fuel out of the squirters on top of the carb the instant you move the throttle, if not make sure there is no clearance, you may need to back off the spring loaded screw to take up the gap. the accelerator pump cam may have been messed with by the shop you had it to, it's kind of hidden on the throttle linkage. it mounts if a couple of positions, you MAY need to move it to the position that activates the accelerator pump sooner, but most likely only if it has been messed with by someone. second, you can check the power valve, it may have blown, but shouldn't have because newer holleys have power valve blowout protection, but that's no guarantee. now is when a vacuum guage would come in handy, you'll want to take a vacuum reading at idle and have a PV that is rated a few numbers(inches of vacuum) lower than your vacuum reading, take a drive with the vacuum gauge connected and watch it, you'll probably see that your bog comes on consistantly at a particular vacuum reading, if so try to get a power valve with that number. if you don't have a vacuum gauge, it's basically trial and error, you'll have to pull the valve, see what number it is and probably get one a couple of numbers higher and see if it helps.

that's a REAL quick synopsis of what to do, like i said reference the web or a good book.

yes you'll have to spend a few bucks on a vacuum gauge and parts along the way, but the knowledge you'll gain will be invaluable.
