Hi... So braking down an 8BA and it has a big crack. My thoughts are it’s not salvageable. Anyone pin a block cracked like this successfully in the past? Thanks
Funny the thread for the head bolt on the right doesn't appear to have a crack in it, casting flaw maybe?
Look for other damage and if none and you know someone who is try the silver solder or braze. Fatal cracks are ones into combustion or valves. You will get better answers as time goes by.
Quite common crack in flattys. Not usually a problem, I would not attempt to do a repair. The 8BA in my roadster has an identical crack. Have over 75000 mi on it with no problems. Try your post on Ford Barn, great amount of flathead knowledge and experience on that sight
No need to repair this common crack. Just watch the torque on that head bolt. It might not torque to spec but will still work just fine. Use #2 sealant on that head bolt threads. I have the same crack on my 8BA. No need to worry about it. Is the rest of the block, okay? Be sure to check the oil pan rails. Get the block cleaned and magnafluxed. If the cylinders need work, they can sleeve them or hone them. Most cracks in the block can be pinned with no problem. Either way, the block is in need of machining.
Jest took another look at your pic. The crack I was referring to is the top one from the head bolt hole to the water jacket hole. Would require someone with more knowledge than I to make the call on the large crack(???) at the bottom of the pic
Thanks for all the input. Stripping off what I think might be good parts for now.. This picture is a better shot of the crack In question. Again thanks for all the input really appreciate the wealth of information here on the H.A.M.B....
Oh my, the first crack is normal from stud to water hole between #1 . Just run some block sealant. The second crack is a winner . Not into a combustion chamber but i suspect it a goner, not really worth pursuing and spending a bunch of wages on to confirm your suspicions. A freeze crack most likely, 3 stud holes and a water hole and it hasn't stopped yet.
