When my dad was 13 or 14 probably 1940, 41 he bought a 30 Model A coupe for 20.00. This was his first car that actually ran and he could drive it to school. This lasted until the war started and rationing of gas, tires and lots of other things started. He then bought a Tudor A and started hauling neighbor kids to school for gas money. This is where his coupe met its demise. While dad was at school his dad cut up his coupe to make a grain elevator drive. Fast forward to last fall. I was out looking at a neighbors combine he wanted to trade when I noticed he had a coupe in one of his shed's. I asked him if he was going to do anything with it and he said it had sat since 1963 so he doubted it, but he needed to talk to his son first. Anyway I got the coupe in the trade and we gave it to dad for his birthday. When we got it back to the shop we had it running is 45 minutes. Today it is headed to the body shop for new paint. Dad wants it by fall to drive in the homecoming parade. This summer I will be working on painting his engine and frame an starting on the upholstery. Thought you guys might like to at least see the starting point. Later D1
PICS! Southwest Kansas? Where are you at? I'm in Wellington. There are some cars hidden around here. ^_^
I just got back from a trip to see relatives near Osborne Kansas (North Central) and there are always cars sitting everywhere. http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?folder_id=1654138 Some pictures of your coupe would be great!
So are ya going to chop and channel the combine? Barnfind stories rock. Thanks for sharing. And pics would make things even better.
sorry about the pic not being there I forgot to resize. This pick was taken after it was in our shop. When we were pulling down the road on the trailor it looked like a dust storm behind us. As for what part of Kansas I'm in. I am about 35 miles NW of Dodge. D1
It didn't set in the shop a day before dad was offered 5000.00 for it. Surprising as dad has always sold anything he said no he wanted to keep it. I think he may be getting sentimental in his old age. D1
I like those long headlights. The first ride in yer Model A is free. After that you have to start fixing it
Maybe not sentimental, but at least he knows what it's worth. He would have been crazy to give that away for 5K. One that nice would bring more $ than that.
The joke is on you. First saturday you go into town your dad is going to cut it up and make an irrigation pump drive out of it.
dang what a find.......use the shell as a feeder, use the frame as a wagon and use the eninge to power a pump.......
Actually what i believe they did to make power units out of them was to take off the body some left the cowl. Shorten the frame to make it more maneuverable around the farm. Then when they had it positioned where it needed to be they would jack up one drive tire block it so it could not move and replace the wheel on the side that was in the air with whatever drive they needed at the time and away you go. In this case I think some sort of make shift drive Line was bolted to the hub and drove the grain elevator. I have also seen flat belt pulleys modified to run any number of things.
Holy ****! That A is the ***s. Wish I could find one like that in a barn around here. Run it just like that, don't even wash it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey "Scrible", Hows the '57 comin' along? John
You know I really thought he might just do that, but he wants it to be like the nice ones he remembers as a kid. D1
