This picture has popped several times. The young lady is Janet Pilgrim who worked in the circulation department of Playboy magazine. Hef talked her into posing and she was playmate 3 times in 1955-6. She passed away this year at 82 years.

Trophy presentations were not an ordinary, everyday thing at the drags back then. Unless of course, it was something big, like the National Championships events. But for setting a national record in the competition coupe category back in 1959-60, the Leffler-Loukas Comp Coupe received a trophy during an intermission on a weekly event at Lions Dragstrip. It had all of the hoopla of a Hollywood movie set up. The trophy girl in the red drew the attention of most spectators as the style of garb was black, white, khaki, dark blue and out pops this “Woman in Red.” She matched the red, Lions Class Winner Jacket on the owner/driver, Neil Leffler.

This coupe, like most of the competition coupes were FEDs with a coupe body and streamlining. At least the early versions looked like coupes. Later on, people were dropping heavily, modified coupe bodies onto front engine dragsters to compete in the very popular class.

They (Lefflers) were now, So Cal locals as they moved their base of operations out here. In their attempt to break all drag racing records, the Leffler-Loukas coupe was deemed the record holder by the Drag News paper and given an award. It took place in the middle of an ordinary, drag racing weekend. That was very weird. But, after all, this is So Cal.

This event was never publicized or shown (as far as I know) since that time at Lions Dragstrip. Does anyone have other photos of the event or internet photos of the awards ceremony?

Hey Roo,

Here is the original Leffler-Loukas coupe that came out west in 1959-60. They made a tour of the hot west coast dragstrips while setting records along the way. We saw and filmed them at Lions Dragstrip and at the Bakersfield Smokers March Meet. At Bakersfield, he beat the Colburn Glaze Coupe with a rolling start that no one protested, but I caught it on film.

The Leffler Bros coupe, “World’s Fastest Coupe,” made a swing to the West Coast of California in 1959-60. They raced at a lot of the local strips. Here is a compilation of their run through several of the places where I filmed the drag races. (Lions and Bakersfield) It was an impressive coupe to say the least…

Even though, he got a "California Stop" running start against the Colburn Glaze coupe at the 1960 Bakersfield Smokers Meet. Red light …? You be the judge… (The Lefflers moved to So Cal in 1960) Californian’s are known for their “California Stop” folklore, but, this super-fast, record holding, transplanted, visitor, takes the cake…a win is a win?

Hello,
There was a recent development in identification of the race cars involved in the film clip I recently posted. The film was taken during the 1960 Bakersfield Smokers March Meet in the Competition Coupe class. I originally identified the sleek, black comp coupe as the Colburn/Glaze race car racing the Neil Leffler/John Loukas comp coupe. The competitor's name has been changed to Jerry Card vs. the Leffler/Loukas Comp Coupe.

The correct identification has now been changed and it is important to get the names of the racers identified in my films. 57 year old memories sometimes gets clogged up in the rush to post the historic films.

Hello,
An addendum to the trophy presentation with the "Woman in Red" at Lions Dragstrip. The movie and photos were taken in 1959 for the Leffler/Lloukas Competition Coupe, not 1960. (Bakersfield was in 1960) These are the only movies/photos I have of the record setting coupe on the West Coast.

The lady on the Vette is not a trophy girl. That is Shirley so she was the winner.

 

Great picture of Shirley. Fonda Speedway still races dirt circle track cars, although the drag racing is long gone. They used drag down pit road. They would have to cross over the banked track at the end of the 1/8th mile causing alot of the dragcars to go airborne.

Kenny Lindley/Don Hampton Miss Fire FED

This scene was played our many times on the west coast, especially at Lions. Kenny Lindley’s Miss Fire FED driven by Don Hampton (of the Hampton blower fame) made the winner’s circle almost weekly in the late 50s and early 60s. The sleek white race car was one of our favorites racing at Lions Dragstrip.
Lions pits, fire up, staging lane...
The Miss Fire FED was one of the first streamlined full body race cars. With the skinny wires in front to the big slicks in the rear, it was the finite point of racing design to go fast. Don Hampton drove many cars, but this Kenny Lindley’s Miss Fire race car was one of the best for the era.

(Note: you drive almost 2400 x 2 miles and race in the finals against the same So Cal guy from the weekly events at Lions Dragstrip in Long Beach)

The film clip shows Kenny Lindley/Don Hampton at Lions in early 1959. The Lindley/Hampton Miss Fire sound comes from the September 1959 Nationals. Same sound same race car.
