IMG_0156.JPG IMG_0155.JPG IMG_0153.JPG IMG_0240.JPG IMG_0241.JPG Are there any reference materials or web based information services that could assist with decoding this engine?

Suffix code on the block's stamping pad, as near as I can figure, is; 21 6638526

Some web based references indicate that "Chevrolet division" had additional information in the suffix code, with the last two places being letters, which can reference transmission type...HP rating...a/c or hi-perf. or other. As you can see...no letters here. I would like to know if there is any additional decoding in the remaining numbers of this suffix code.

Engine Block Casting Number is 3858180.....and since the first two digits of the suffix code references a Canadian Pontiac the engine may have been installed in passenger cars such as an "Canadian" Acadian/Canso, Beaumont and maybe others. Casting Date is D226 which is referenced to indicate April 22, 1966. The "180" block is a 327 with small journal 2-bolt mains. The Chevrolet division references these blocks as being used for 1965 and 1966 passenger cars, including, Chevelle, and Corvette. Some 1964 to 1967 use with this casting number for Truck and 1965 Corvette.

This is what I've got so far.

The number "2" refers to the Pontiac Division. The number "1" refers to its birthplace in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. The rest of the numbers...I have no idea.... other than some of the digits may reflect part of the car's VIN it was assigned to. ..Or is there more?

The cylinder head casting numbers are 3890462...AND...have "Canada" cast into the cylinder heads as well. They show the double hump cast marking at the front. I have not removed the heads yet. They may be 1.94" intake...1.50" exhaust or 2.02" intake...1.60" exhaust.

Engine was purchased, in Hamilton, Ontario.

Sorry for the poor quality pictures. T IMG_0154.JPG he engine was in a dim lit barn and the flash on my camera wasn't behaving.

The block is definitely not 64-67 Acadian as they used the block with the recessed oil filter, same as the Chevy II.
The "462" heads were (generally) for 67 production (U.S.).
How close are the head dates to the block?

  3. Sounds like you have it figured out for the most part.. I'd just be guessing, but it's likely the 66 in the suffix represents the year and the rest is serial number? There doesn't seem to be any indication there of what model car it was slated for although being a 327 it was likely a performance option - Beaumont (my buddies SD had a 283)? Was there a full-sized Poncho with an SD option out of Oshawa or was that strictly an American-assembled deal?
Do the valve covers have Pontiac stamped in them?
Neat find anyway as I don't recall seeing one in my travels..!

Thanks. The block is 1966 and as I recall the heads were too and were original to the engine. I'd have to go back to where the engine is stored to get another look. Although there were full size cars manufactured in Oshawa, I'm not sure about the SD option built in Canada. I'm curious since the American suffix codes do have some sort of reference to other details. Dave...I think your right about the 6's referring to the block year as well. The rest of the numbers sure has me stumped though.
