when did sedans become hot rods? when did pick ups? I'm thinking post war but have no idea. Nothing against sedans or trucks just curious if it was a shortage of coupe and roadster bodies or preference or both. Thanks. Edit: talking hot rods here . pre 36 .
When guys with hot rods couldn't cram a family of 5 in a coupe. Sent from my SM-G900R4 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
From the way I always heard it was that the roadsters were the true hotrods and everything else was not so much, that was way before my time and I think thats about the time the saying coupes were for chickens came about.
I'd say with the advent of drag racing where as long as you had the desired year model body style didn't matter that much if you were building a gasser or altered. I'd think more showed up every year in the 70's when guys started traveling coast to coast for rod runs. Keep the rug rats in out of the weather in a sedan on those trips rather than sticking them in the rumble seat. I think there are a couple of folks on here that can honestly tell you that they rode a few thousand miles cross country in the rumble seat in the 70's and may have even hidden down on the floor of the rumble seat during a rain storm closing the lid.
Considering that Hot Rod Magazine did features on more door sedans back in the early days, it has always been such. I have a forty tudor sedan, and consider it to be a "hot rod". I do not have the billfold or, maybe, the head start to fall into your guidelines. Sorry, but at least us under 50 guys will be around to drive up the prices on your more desirable stuff when you give up the lifestyle or are gone...
Curious what year hot rod mag did the articles. I guess it's a tough question with so many definitions of a hot rod.
Not sure, and rereading your original post, I may be wrong to take offense. My old copies are post war, back in the early 60's, so I may be out of line. You seem to want a time line, and I perceived it as a disrespect against non roadster based cars. If so, I want to appologize.
No problem. I am genuinely curious. Had to be a time when it happened. I look at the 40s hot rod thread and only see sedans in the lot at the lakes or pushing roadsters. Now they are included in everything. Except trog. Some of my favorite hot rods are pick ups. Same deal . There had to be a tipping point from rare to common.
My dad had a 29 ford tudor sedan just before the war...he was still in high school and got a super good deal from a family member. He rebuilt the engine and ran a 97 carb on it with a straight pipe and red 35 ford 16 inchers. Northern Oregon was a little too chilly and wet for roadsters.
I think roadsters were used in the beginning because you could remove the fenders and have an extremely light car which in turn helped with performance. The warm SoCAl weather and being exposed to the movies helped spread the hot rod craze
Check out the sedan and Coupe lakes thread it’s an eye opener. Made me feel a lot better about the flak I received for sacrificing my Tudor and 32 “push truck” Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Scta was roadster only at first, that's why russetta was formed after awhile scta allowed closed cars one of don Montgomery 's books talks about it quite a bit
