Condolences to the Gurney family and friends on the p***ing of Dan. This is one of those names that brings me back to a younger age when Wide World of Sports filled the TV with racing excitement. Rest in Peace Dan. As evidenced by earlier posts Dan also grew up with Hotrods as well... Thanks for the unfortunate news @rob-redm https://www.drivingline.com/articles/dan-gurney-much-more-than-one-of-the-worlds-best-racers/ http://www.hotrod.com/articles/0709sr-dan-gurney/ https://www.caranddriver.com/features/dan-gurney-obituary-feature
His V-12 T 1G Eagle is one of the most beautiful race cars ever, but he was the first to do the victory champagne spray.
Condolences to family and friends. Was always a fan of him. He was a winner both on and off the track.
Very sad news to hear. Not only was he a great racer and innovator , he was a very gracious man and a true gentleman. The way he looked after his employees was a true sign of his great character [some of them worked for AAR for 40 + years, and they always spoke highly of him] Phil Remington was employed by Gurney full time up until age 91 and didn't want to retire. America should be proud to have had Dan Gurney as a citizen and amb***ador , In fact the whole world racing community has the same opinion, he was a great amb***ador for all avenues of motorsport. R.I.P Mr Gurney, I feel privileged to have met you on a few occasions.
Saw him several times at Goodwood here in the UK, at the Festival of Speed in the mid 90's when he drove his Eagle up the hill, and then a few years ago, at the Goodwood Revival when he recreated his birth of the champagne spraying tradition with great gusto and a big smile on his face. Absolute legend.
A Sad day for sure, but a life well lived. Dan Gurney was every where when I was growing up, it wasn't until later that I learned of his previous life as a "hotrodder". Go in Peace, Dan Gurney!
W O W. RIP Dan. My first little shop was next door to Dan's AAR (All American Racers) in Santa Ana California. He'd pop his head in the door @ times and say "How's ya doin little buddy" he'd come in and we'd chat a while. A very humble and a true gentleman. Gods speed Dan.
Bummer. Mr. Gurney’s 61 Chevy Bubbletop w/ 409 was recently brought back to the US. Still retaining it’s original running gear. Great man.
The only good feeling about seeing the weekly death announcements of so many of our racing heroes is the fact they lived a long and healthy life decades after their racing careers ended and to enjoy seeing much love and respect we had for them. My condolences to his family.
Sad deal on one hand in that the family I am sure will miss him dearly. On the other hand what a life and legacy he has left and to experience all of his success and live to the pretty decent age of 86 years. He always seemed to be a cl*** act and will always be one of America’s greatest to strap into a race car. Rest in peace for sure.
A friend and I were saying the same thing. Thanks for mentioning Keith Jackson along with Dan Gurney. Keith was one of the great all-around sportscasters.
Late 60's / early 70's. I was treated to a trip to the Seattle International Raceway (SIR) by Formula Race Car designer/builder Lyle Forsgren. I couldn't believe it when I found Gurney and Andretti (sp?) were at the track. Seems like just yesterday. RIP Dan. Fourdy
I had totally forgotten that Dan and Brock Yates won the very first Cannonball way back when in a Ferrari.... He did it ALL, man.
